Cowl Flaps

Featured Replies

AM I the only one who thinks that the cowl flaps are a bit too efficient?

There should be a much higher heat ratio here.

Based on operational experience?

How many hours on R2800s?

SO my point is not valid unless i used r2800's?

I have flown prop engine planes with cowl flaps. I also have mechanic certs. I know how heat works. The heat model is very tame.

Obviously my opinion.

Justin,

I think Kyle's point is that the R2800 Cowl Flap performance is not something that many users are familiar since there are so few of these birds left flying.  That being said, we did have a team of pilots who actually fly the DC-6 then also then flew the PMDG model and critiqued it's performance and they felt the aircraft performance matched up quite well with how the real aircraft behaved.

If you have concrete data indicating that what we modeled is wrong, feel free to send it to us in a Support ticket and we will pass it along to the team to look into, but saying that you "Think" it's incorrect without data to back it isn't really helpful in any way.

I do not have experience with r2800's, just my experience with twin engine and single engine props(DC3's for example). I have also been in a 377(Cockpit passenger).

I only have this data to quantify my opinion. It was only my opinion. I just wanted to see how others felt, right now.

I have seen other comments about cowl flap performance.

Just wanted to get something constructive going if it was under par.

I was involved in the testing and recall that the developers put much effort into getting the heat/cooling simulation right. PMDG probably got it right..., and I don't believe the comparison with DC-3 is close (of which the owner of PMDG owns and operates one). Another design element that went hand in hand was the drag from the cowls. None of this stuff was easy.

I do have to say, on a positive note. I love the vibration effect.

Good, even that took several iterations before everyone involved agreed to it.

I took a special interest in this because my aging Uncle was a prop mechanic on the C-118 right after the Berlin airlift. Heard a lot of good stories.

That's what she said!  :P
