[XP11] GA plane advice

Featured Replies

Regarding modelling and programming, all of our models are on the same level. After we did the Cherokee 140 (original version and classic version), we updated the Arrow (and the other aircraft) to have the same basic features (such as custom engine start logic, sound engine, scroll wheel support). Textures have always been the same quality anyway in all aircraft.

So it's really a matter of taste. If you like the Arrow, get the Arrow :) If you like to do me personally a favor, get the Cherokee 140 "G" (just joking ;-) ).

Ok, thanks, that's good to know! Right now I like the Arrow more, also because I have flown the Cherokee in P3D a lot already. The Arrow is something different and has a few options I like to have. So, I'll buy that one the next time I am at my XP computer! ;) Thanks for the tips, all! Don't be surprised though if I buy one of the Cherokees later on anyway... ;) And that could well be the G version, not only to please you but also because that Aspen is something new for me. Makes it a lot different too than my P3D Cherokee. ;)

We will learn how to do proper XP11 aircraft with our current project (PA-30 Twin Comanche).

I look forward to purchasing that! I realize this is still rather off-topic, but I hope you have considered implementing an option for the RealityXP GTN 750. I am sure being one of the first devs to implement an option for it would be beneficial for sales, and it's a great fit for the Twin Comanche. From what I have read, implementation is also fairly easy.

Oh, then also consider Carenado's A36 Bonanza. Their Aspen is very well done, in parts more accurate than ours.

We have discussed this a lot and it should not be that difficult.

I noticed earlier that my fps really take a hit with 3rd party aircraft. For example, I bough the Carenado A36 and the fps went from 37 in the default 172 to 18 on the A36.

In XP10? The default 172 in XP10 has a quite simple 3D model. Most payware aircraft have much more detailed models, needed a more powerful computer. It also depends on your rendering settings. Actually, the A36 is quite easy on FPS, compared to newer models...

(And there's also a beautiful Carenado A36 with Aspen).

I bought this as my first XP 11 aircraft.  It looks great and the Aspen functions great.  The only problem is that the landing gear doors do not close upon retracting the gear.

I am using XP11. I probably should have said that earlier.

Thank you! But let me know what you think of the C140 "G". Or wait some hours, we will probably soon release some kind of free "patch" which adds fuselage reflections to the C140.

Well, I took the 140 up for a quick flight. Enjoyable, and of course I have some comments that I'll leave on your subforum at the .org, since I always find the littlest details to go on about. My first impressions were good though. That Aspen seems to work very nicely, and GNS units pair nicely with it. I do need to study it a bit more though, like I said only a quick flight, because...

That Traveler is really, really nice! I took it for a longer flight tonight, taking off from a freshly installed (and also amazing looking, my gosh, who needs Orbx??) Bella Coola and flying for about 45 minutes out and back again. I had a few tiny comments on it (which I posted over on your subforum), but you guys did a really amazing job with it, it handles absolutely superb and looks amazing.

Funny story from tonight... I was sitting in the cockpit before the flight, admiring everything, looking around at the details, clicking things... So I'm starting my approach, carefully, since I'd read in the manual that you have to be mindful of excessive speed in the AA-5. So I've got my speed down to where I can apply some flaps, hit my hardware toggle, and.. nothing. At all. My first reaction was to think that something on either my console or my settings had gone wonky, so I pan the view down to the in-cockpit switch (while trying to stay lined up for my approach) and... nothing.... Now I'm wondering what the heck is going on, and the runway is getting closer... OHHH WAIT, was I randomly clicking things before the flight? Sure enough, I'd popped the circuit breaker for the flaps. Push it in, and it's all good. Except now, I came in a bit hotter than I wanted, floated a bit, and didn't touch down quite as smoothly as I wanted...  oopps...

Anyhow, good stuff. Definitely made it onto my highly recommended list.

Er... you guys aren't helping here...!  :P  It's difficult enough already!

Question: any of those vFlyteAir planes with GPS: can the GPS be removed/unmounted and if not at least turned off (while the radio's etc. stay on)? I sometimes (and sometimes often) like to fly with VOR only, triangulation etc. and in my A2A Cherokee I could select the panel without GPS. Flying with VOR only with a GPS in view is a bit odd somehow.  I could of course buy the Originel Cherokee specially for this purpose but as far as I can tell (or did someone post that already) it only has one VOR gauge and no DME and that might make things a bit too difficult for my casual way of flying.  Besides, is nice if one plane has the various options for doing what I want.

EDIT

Come to think of it: the GPS in the Arrow is out of view by default so that one isn't a real problem. Still, if there is a way to turn it of or remove it if I want to... Reading the Arrow manual right now btw: cool! Can't wait to take it into the air!

  • Commercial Member

No, you can't switch them off. (Well you can but can't use them for COM/NAV freq tuning then.)

Ok, thanks, well, no big deal.  In the meantime (I just couldn't wait) I already ordered the Arrow (on the Mac at work) and downloaded it so when I have to time to get behind my XP PC I am ready to go!

EDIT

O, wow, I saw the new manual (I had downloaded the older one from the site): besides that the manual itself looks better than the old one I see the Arrow now has a STEC 65 AP! Nice! It's getting better and better!

While I am at it: how do I install the liveries...? Sorry, this is my first real X-Plane-plane...

The default liveries should all be available after you installed the aircraft. In X-Plane 11 you need to click on "customize" to select a different livery. (It was much easier in X-Plane 10's interface...)

Downloaded liveries are extracted into the "liveries" folder within the Arrow folder.

Thanks once more! I downloaded and unzipped the files on my Mac and the liveries were extracted into a seperate folder but I see now, looking at the names of the folder, they actually should have been unzipped into the Arrow folder itself indeed. I will simply copy that folder into it then.

Had a few minutes left and loaded the plane. Looks really awesome!!! Even better than I expected!!! One (little) disappointment and one problem though:

(Little) disappointment: the screenshots on the site show two old fashioned radio's and a GPS on the far right: my Arrow however has the GPS where radio 1 was... Bummer. Didn't expect that and this sort of spoils the possibility to fly with two old fashioned radio's and VOR. I can of course use the GPS for VOR1 but as I said earlier, I don't like this. You might consider updating the screenshots on the site.

Problem: I can't tell yet how it flies because in XP11 the handbrake is stuck and there is no way I can release it. Not by clicking and not by using B or V. So now I am also stuck to the ground. Is this a XP11 problem? I read others are using this plane in XP11 without problems.

BTW I totally forgot that I probably have to pay for the XP11 upgrade whenever it is released. But well, I think that will take quite a while yet and I don't think I would have waited for it...

I probably will get over the GPS replacing the radio but if someone has an idea how to release the handbrake... I'd be much obliged. :hi:

Have you tried "dragging" the hand brake instead of just clicking on it?  In the Traveler, you have to "drag" it to release sort of like the throttle, not just click it.

Haven't flown the Arrow, but just a quick thought.  Good luck!
