2nd ssd

Featured Replies

running out of room on current ssd will the 2nd one be independent of the first one or can it be linked to it : can I still download things from FSX when I run out of room on ssd #1 onto ssd #2 or is the path going to be different an therefore unusable thanks     kevin okeefe

Everything should be on the same SSD. There are ways to get it to work, but doing so could cause issues. You may want to just pop the new SSD in, uninstall FSX and then reinstall everything on the new drive.

Easy way - Buy a second SSD much bigger than the one you have (obviously!)
Clone an image of the drive you have to another internal drive or external USB.
Swap the first SSD with the new SSD.
Install the image onto the new drive.

I recommend Clonezilla Live - http://clonezilla.org/ which is free and bootable from a USB pen drive but you really need to be technically competent with drives and partitions etc (including making your USB drive bootable.) to use it as it is not for the unexperienced!

The advantage then of creating an image is that you then have a backup for future use.

Hi,

You don't even have to clone an image. I changed my SSD where FSX is installed (different from the drive where the OS is installed). As long as the drive letter is the same it will works as the path will remain the same.

Just copy the whole folder from the old SSD to a temporary storage, swap the SSDs, verify or change the drive letter of the new one to match the one of the old one.
I did it successfully on my side.

If it's just a folder copy yes then go ahead.

I assumed it was a whole windows install with FSX on a single drive. If it has Windows too then you need to make an image and include the boot partition unless you already have multidrive setup with boot partition on another drive. Your new drive won't boot otherwise.

Far easier to do an image than recreate the boot partition manually.

There are several things you can do to save space on your FSX drive, especially if it is your C: drive.  First, move all the download files such as scenery and addons to the second drive.  This alone saved my 80 GB.  Then, you can move most add on scenery from the FSX folder to the second drive but you have to edit each entry in the scenery library to make this work.
