Airports out of date

Featured Replies

Airport and airspace data changes daily.  In the U.S, these changes are transmitted by FAA in the daily National Flight Data Digest, a.k.a NFDD (Niff-dy). There is no way that any simulator could hope to keep track of these changes in real time. Even the 28 day AIRAC cycle would be cost prohibitive unless you charge for it.  That's where FS Aerodata using Navigraph data has found its niche.

No one is asking for a real time change. But a fresh database with each new iteration of the base sim, shouldn't be too much to ask, considering it is still using a database that is more or less from 2004.

Databases cost money,  That might be hard to justify with a free version update.

Another famous B744 simulator platform that recently reappeared in an updated version after a long hiatus offers an annual update each March of the navigation data for the simulator and FMS, for a price. It's a reasonable price, so that might be an option for LM to consider.   However, I don't know if that would be a better value than an  fsaerodata subscription.

Trying to look at it from LM's point of view.

Thanks,

For a sim that costs $200 I can expect an up-to date setup of airports and navdata, can't I?

I think some people misunderstand the fsaerodata  model. Navigraph supplies updated approach  and navaid data on a monthly basis. For XP11, there is a native download from Navigraph. But because in P3d the individual default airport BGL  files contain the approach and navaid data, fsaerodata provides the updated airport files IF one already has a Navigraph  subscription. Where this process is weakest is where the physical runway geometry  (or numbering) has changed. But that would be true in both sims. At that point, one is better  off just buying recent vintage 3rd party airports.

Fsaerodata will update the airways, waypoints navaids and ILS approaches. Hérve Sors' programs will update navaids and ILS approaches (but not airways).

But I think that what the OP is primarily looking for are updates to the actual airports themselves - to the physical runways, taxiways, terminals etc to reflect 2017 data. That would be a huge undertaking, and one which LM apparently does not see as a priority.

For those whining ask Ray Smith how fun it is to update the airports.  By the time he gets done updating the major airports and tries to do the secondary, the major airports have to be changed again.

Are you really upset because some dirt strip in idontknow, Iowa says runway 19 instead of 20?  Is that going to make you buy a different sim?  Even if LM did go through and update them all, they would have to do it again in a year if not constantly all because someone's home airport added a hangar or terminal that year.

I think the OP question has been answered.
