Why ditch BEV for GE???

This is clearly not a thread where you have any further contribution to make. But I thank for your contribution so far. They are perfectly simple, valid points outlined above. And the answers are equally simple, no grey areas or fudging needed, just the truth from the developers:1: FScene does NOT ship with different texture sets for its regional textures. Only those previously unchanged textures are changed.TRUE/FALSE?2: BEV either does this, and therefore perpetrates the same smarmy trick on the paying public, or they genuinely deliver a complete replacement set for their European product. I'm sure we'd all settle for just 75% of the textures being genuinely `new`. TRUE/FALSE?FScene started this trend for `regional` textures, and so started the suckering of simmers whcih other developers have, for their own reason, perpetuated. FS does not deliver regional variation based on texture, but based on landclass. None of the aftermarket packages deliver replacement landclass, they are regarded as separate products. Therefore none of these textures actually offer `regional` variation. Only GE seems honest enough to admit it. Simmers can only be left wondering why?Allcott

Hi Allcott,OK, one more attempt on my part:1. FS is devided into regions. 2. Only Region B, North America, has a full complement of customized textures. Other regions have fewer unique textures. If a land class file calls a texture that doesn't have a regional equivalent then the equivalent texture Region B texture will be used.3. It is not possible to simply add texture sets with region-specific names because texture use is hard-coded in the lclookup.bgl4. It is, however, possible to create region-specific texture sets. The problem is in the regional overlap because now my European version of the Region B texture will show up everywhere (and overwrite the original Region B texture). The solution? A front-end switcher.5. GE doesn't have a problem with this because it delivers exactly one replacement file for each existing FS texture (actually a few less, AFAIK). That means city textures in Europe look just like city textures in the US, and so do the forests and other Region B only textures. Easy to install and use but it IS a limitation and, of course, wouldn't let them split their textures into regional packages without selling duplicates.Have you looked at VOZ? If it isn't possible to "deliver regional variation based on texture" how come VOZ offers four custom file sets, even within the same region? Because one can do so with the use of front-end switchers or "themes" and they work perfectly fine. And one doesn't need a specific land class file for it either. You see the problem with your argument is that you assume guilt where there is no evidence of the "tactics" you accuse FScene and BEV of. It IS possible that they re-use textures but we don't know unless we look at the files. Yelling "fraud", "deflection", "suckering", etc. only exposes your bias, it doesn't provide any evidence to anyone. Hardly what I would consider "education", yours or that of other (potential) users.I just hope you have the integrity to be just as quick posting here should you find out that you were wrong.Cheers, Holger

>Hi Allcott,>>OK, one more attempt on my part:now WHO's having fun fishing for points?:+

>Very intersting post Stephen.>>I didn't even think of istalling GE and BEV together.>>Does this mean that the GE ones fill in were the BEV ones>don't when installed as you describe?>>Does it affect the autogen being displayed? With BEV I get>alot of autogen scenery which is great but with GE, my autogen>goes away.>>Also, does using UT for USA & Canada integerate well with both>GE and BEV.>>Thanks!>>Scott :-)>Proud user of BEV an UT, still trying to get the GE textures>to work.Since both BEV and GE are simply replacement textures for the FS9 default textures both will work without a hic up with UT. If you install GE over whatever you have in your world/texture folder you're going to wind up with a GE world, which I stated in my earlier post...isn't a bad world to fly in. Once GE is installed and you'd like to use BEV textures...simply re-apply your favorite theme and existing BEV textures will overwrite the GE textures and you'll now be flying with BEV textures with any gaps existing in BEV textures being filled with GE rather than the default FS9 textures. However...when you re-applied your theme the Configurator II backed up whatever you had in your World/Texture folder (in this case GE textures) and simply made them your default FS9 textures as far as the Configurator II is concerned. So let's say you're flying around with BEV textures and you come across an area where a texture just doesn't look right or because of it's primary design doesn't look all that great in some places, and creates a repeating pattern, you go to the Configurator II and choose between the various textures available from BEV and also choose the default texture (which is now GE) as a possible choice. In other words...there isn't a spot in the entire world that should be covered with default FS9 textures with the use of these two products. The soon to be released volume 5 and 6 will essentially be additional options to choose from and will fill in the remaining gaps of the BEV textures. The whole point is to make it as real as it gets...and if the combining of two products can achieve that for you...have at it. I can remember before I started producing BEV textures that I used several different texture sets from several different artist/producers to achieve a very realistic world. Heck I'm still doing it, not only with ground textures but with roads and rivers and shorelines and etc. etc. I use both UT and American Data to achieve what I feel is the best and most realistic scenery in the areas that they were designed to enhance. And now I use BEV, GE and Lynnarts textures to do the same thing with ground textures. -Stephen

Man, this really was a hard one for me... After using both BEV and GE I'd have to say GE is the one for me. I love BEV's trees and hard winter textures but Atlanta never looked so good in the winter like it does now with GE. I don't want to get into Sydney and Cannes France (I know, that's outside BEV's coverage area so that's not a fare comparison)... :-)

This thread has run its course, with multiple sides heard and explanations given. That's enough and I am locking the thread.

>BEV looks much more realistic from about 1000' AGL and above>and the GE textures are just too cartoonish looking in my>opinion.I guess this is a perfect example of "eye of the beholder". I couldn't disagree more and felt exactly the opposite.
