Took the Plunge...Expectations Far Exceeded

Recommended Posts

I operate switch's, knobs, levers using the mouse and you can use the mouse even without Flyinside in P3Dv4 but Flyinside has so many other advantages that it is a must have for VR in flightsims.

VR may not be for everyone because we all have our own ideas on how things should work and what we expect but, being a tech junkie, I had to at least try it out to see what all the fuss was. Glad I did because it gives me one more way to enjoy this hobby.

I'm very farsighted. My distance vision is 20/10, but I need a +2.0 correction for close work - basically anything closer than about 2 feet is blurry without reading glasses.

I don't need my glasses at all to use the Rift. The internal lenses in the headset collimate the image so that it appears to be physically distant. The only folks who would need their glasses with the headset are those who are nearsighted, who require a correction for distant objects.

Wish I didn't have to wear them. I'm at the stage I need bifocals, but find a 3.25 or 3.5 reading glasses set things just about right. I've spent hours now trying to convince myself that I don't need them by moving the HMD  around on my head, adjusting the IPD setting, and for me it's a no go without glasses. It's close, but after a while I can feel the eyestrain starting, and the display is not as crisp as I get with glasses. Guess I could try the snap on prescription lenses for the Rift, still thinking that over.

I'm sooooooooo happy with mine. Now, all the messing around I had to do with my glasses is just a memory. There were times I just went ahead and played 2D because I didn't feel like messing around with my glasses in the headset, and taking the Rift off to go do something for a bit was annoying because I knew I would have to fiddle with my glasses again to get the hmd back on.....

Now, it's just yank off the Oculus, go pet the dog or whatever, pull the headset back on, no problemo. :emu_melk:

Ya, I should just do it. Been well over a year since my last eye exam, better make an appointment I guess. Sorry OP, getting off topic.

So much tempted to buy but since I am on a laptop (MSI GT72VR) I am not sure about the performance even though it is "VR" series. How would 6700HQ + GTX1070 + 24GB RAM combination perform for P3D and X-Plane? In a payware airport with NGX+UT2+Orbx Global+Europe+Vector+As16 I get around 20-25 fps and 777 around 20 fps.

I can only answer for X-Plane 11 but I think you will be fine with a 1070. I have a 1080 and can put most settings to high. You may have to forgo one or two more settings with a 1070 to get the right balance. Soon VR support will be native and may offer better performance. They will also eventually move the API to Vulcan which should also mean better GPU utilisation than we currently see. My advice regarding your setup is go for it. Make sure as well that you have at least 3 USB 3.0 ports.

I´ve been flying in VR since the DK2 and the first version of flyinside, and after, literally, hundreds of flights, it still blows me away the moment I seat in a "real" cockpit for a virtual flight.

And it´s so cool to read  first experiences of people discovering Flight Simulation thru VR. Keep them coming please.

As a reference I'm running FlyInside in P3Dv3 using a 980Ti and have zero issues with performance with many settings in P3D more to the right rather than left.

I have a 980ti too, and I have good FPS with p3dv4 but I have micro stutters with SS 1.6 or 1.7. I tried many different settings with slides to the left or to the right (but still those annoying stutters).

But with SS 1.5 and no ASW it´s really smooth with the same FPS, Have you experienced with different Super Sampling settings?

cheers

Hi Carlos,

I haven't played around with different SS settings but only use the default.

Thx Richard!

I´ll probably upgrade on the next couple of months. We should have a good Pc by the time the new Oculus (or whatever) arrive, because if then we have to buy a huge PC and VR googles at the same time the hole in our pockets will be massive.

cheers

I've been playing around with replacing my 980Ti with a 1080Ti. Mostly because that would get me 11 GB VRAM rather than my current 6 GB but then on the other hand I'm not sure if it's needed or would be worth the cost.

Maybe I'll just wait for some time more and then rebuild my complete system and replace my 6700K @ 4.5 GHz as well. However at this time with what exists right now looking at the different simulator platforms I think my rig will be just fine for at least one more year or possibly even two :-)

Ditto to both. Its one of the things that attract me to Aerofly, and now to DCS: the combination of both the VR and the Smoothness!

I've never been a tube-flyer guy; they generally don't interest me at all and never have, but I have to admit, when I'm sitting in the cockpit of a tube' in VR, even after dozens of flights, I can still feel that urge to break into a grin, and sometimes I'll just spontaneously laugh out loud, still awestruck by what I'm seeing and the sensations as I look everywhichway.

It's fun to hear about others encountering that experience.

So, I have my new Rift set up, and it is working in P3DV4. I have a few questions for those more experienced with this.

I have read many references to settings to optimize the visuals such as "1.5" v. "1.6" - I assume these are related to supersampling? The question is: where do I find these? The "settings" menu in the Oculus app has nothing that seems to relate to adjusting resolution, sampling etc. nor do I see any place to set up a specific profile for P3D.

I do know that some of the settings are only available in Win 10. (I run Win 7)

In the Oculus "home" room I see when wearing the headset, there is a P3D icon floating in space under "recents", but pointing at that only launches the sim, which I know one should not do from within Oculus Home.

I have switches on my CH throttle quadrant which I have assigned to deploy and retract flaps, and cycle the gear. These work just fine if I am in standard mode, running the sim on my regular monitor - but they have no effect at all when I am in the Oculus virtual cockpit. The F5 through F8 keys on the keyboard do work for flaps when I am in "Riftland" - but I have to lift the visor so I can peek down to see them, which negates the advantage of using the switches which I can easily find by feel.

On the other had, the CH quadrant switch I assigned to "reset HMD origin" does work fine when in VR.

All my assigned axes do work in VR for throttles, props, mixture, rudder and brakes etc.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Go to your C drive and open program files and look for the Oculus folder. Open it and look for the support folder. Open it and look for Oculus Diagnostics and open that and click on the debug tool. The top selection is where you can change the pixel override number (supersampling).

Thank you. Shortly after posting above, I found and downloaded the 3rd party "Tray Tool", (version 0.80.1). That did the trick for setting up a P3D profile. Just completed a flight around the pattern at 1.7 SS (which my GPU seems able to handle well) and the resolution is much better - certainly not 4K - but the sense of "being there" more than makes up for it.

Whatever was preventing my flap and gear hardware switch assignments from working in VR seems to have resolved itself after a reboot.

My only real complaint is that mouse control of switches and knobs is kind of hit and miss. I do understand that only the white cross seen by the left eye is the "real" mouse cursor. I find I have to "lean in" close to the panel to hit the sweet spot - especially on the frequency adjustment knobs on the radios. Looking forward to the eventual release of Flyinside for P3DV4!

I just ordered the Rift bundle before the sale ends on Monday.  It will be here on Monday.  Can't wait to see what you guys are experiencing.
