Importing .gfp flight plan into Catalog

Featured Replies

This seems to be a problem. I have copied 4 flight plans of the type *.gfp into the appropriate folder. When I press the GTN-750 Import button, the system 'sees' only one of these 4 files. This is the folder

C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Trainers\GTN\FPLN

These are flight plans that I have exported from Little Navmap. The GTN-750 sees only one of them. The other files look ok - I have checked the contents and they all look to be in the correct format.

The one that works

EGJB-LIRE.gfp

To my untutored eye these seem all to be in the correct format .

Hi...

Just a suggestion - Little NavMap (free) exports flight plans to your Garmin so you don't need to worry about syntax...

You may not have noticed that in my OP I mentioned that I exported these flight plans from Little Navmap. The issue is that the GTN sees one of these 4 flight plans. Why only 1 and not the others?  And it is not like you can see them and when you try to load them they fail. They are not even listed.

Hi...

Oh - sorry - guess I skimmed that...

My second guess - if the format is correct - possibly missing waypoints due to mismatched NavData ?

LNM uses the default FS NavData - the Garmin uses a newer set...

Hi, this might be a bug in the way they are handled in 6.41. Do you still have 6.21 installed to compare?

We'll cross check this today too.

I've just tested your flight plan, basically like this:

  1. Open File Explorer to: "C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Trainers\GTN\FPLN" (trainer 6.41 path)
  2. Duplicate the KSLE-KSLE.gfp file included in the sample pack and rename it (same file names as yours).
  3. Open the file with notepad.exe, copy/paste the flight plan line (single line, no carriage return at the end).
  4. Save the file.
  5. Repeat for all flight plans.
  6. Start GTN, boot, Flight Plan | Menu | Catalog | Menu | Import
  7. They all show fine
  8. Start GTN with Americas DB instead, they still show fine.

Mismatch data, most of the waypoints in LN are not present in the GTN, i quited importing plans to the GTN, better doing it directly in the equipment.

Simbrief also exports to the Garmin. Try that.

Well, this is even weirder. What you suggest does NOT work for me. Except if I copy the one file that is displayed, then yes, that is displayed. I can also change the contents with the contents from one of my other flight plans and that shows up and the plan seems to load ok.

But I have to be VERY careful about renaming the copied file. I cannot rename the file to anything I want - it the flight plan ORTF-OYHD.ftp will not work. Nor will almost anything. I can change a few letters in the renamed file (which starts off at something like "EGJB-LIRE - Copy.gfp". This shows up, and I can tweak a few letters, but eventually it will not be displayed.

Through trial and error I have found a pattern. The problem is the first letter of the filename. It can only start with a letter in the range A,B,C,D,E,F,G. If you start the filename with any other letter it will not show up. ie KSLE.grp will not work, but rename it to ASLE.grp and it will. I did not go through the whole alphabet, but got up to about N or so, and nothing after G seems to work.

Hi, this is weird indeed. I'll review a few things about the trainer flight plan files discovery and let you know about this.

In the meantime, you might want to download and compare the files I've been successfully testing in the procedure above.

Those files are not visible on my system. And just to confirm - I am running V2.4.9.0 on a Windows 7 x64 system. I did a few more flights last night. I simply export flight plans from Little Nav Map in gfp format, but just name the file 'a_XXXX_YYYY.gfp' where xxxx, yyyy are the start and end airfields. Works fine, except of course the GTN database does not match the X-Plane database by a long way. But it usually gets me fairly close.

Hi,

after reviewing this, unfortunately I can't see any reason for this issue on your system, but I have some pointers.

First, it might be a bug in v2.4.9 we can't repro because we are already with a newer code base, almost ready for release.

Then, it might be something in the folder access rights. There is an ACL in Windows which prevents 'traversing' a folder, that is more or less preventing a software to access the folder listing. The software can still open a file with its full path, but can't get the file list in the folder. This is something you might want to cross check.

Other than this, it would be great if someone else could just try the pack of 4 flight plans linked above and confirm if this is working or not?!?

We're close to releasing the next update and some of the stability enhancements included affect some of the code around the flight plan import function. Let's see how the next update goes then?

Yep - more than happy to wait until the next update. I have it working ok now that I know to rename the file correctly.

Hi, v2.4.10 RC2 is now live, and I hope it fixes this bug. There was a bug indeed introduced in RC1, which affected the actual 'import' action, and possibly also building the list of flight plan files.

Nope. I downloaded and ran the new installer. Seems to be the same. I am not sure what my installed version actually is - but it all installed ok, so I am guessing it is RC2. But the import screen is still the same.
