Having worked my life career in the US Intelligence Community I am well aware about spreading disinformation, propaganda, etc., etc., and this is not disinformation or propaganda.  I did not make this stuff up.  It is real.  Mankind can see it all in real time.  Someone in Russia used the name "AVSIM" because of its popularity and set up sites.  In the US, this would be a violation of our copyright.  I do know that Tom asked them kindly to remove AVSIM from their site name but they refused.

AVSIM recently received a Copyright Infringement and DMCA Takedown Request indicating AVSIM had a violation of a Boeing copyright and demanding it be taken down immediately or we would be charged for violating a copyright.  Turns out the violation was on the Russian website - AVSIM.su (even our government thinks the site belongs to us!!). 

I have also gone to the site on several occasions after translating the sites.  I see nothing wrong with the sites other than the name and just making sure that our community is aware the sites are not the property of AVSIM's.  Simple as that.  Call it free advertising...

Why?  That's the point i'm trying to make.  This statement alone can deter people from visiting the site for themselves, and getting some great scenery/repaints for Asia/Russia.  

Again...no one is disputing the name thing.  What I am saying is that you are assuming that the site is dangerous when, in fact, there is no evidence to support this.  If all you said in the first post was that Avsim.su is in no way affiliated with Avsim.com would have been perfectly fine. 

It's the subtle placement of those statements in that first post that I focused on, and others did also.

That's all you had to say.  Making the community aware of the similar names with no affiliation to your site is something everyone should know.  Adding stuff like the first quote, does not really help anyone, when in fact there is no danger in visiting the site.

No. I am familiar with it. But James' lawyers would have to prove that he needs an .org domain (which is why I chose that and not something close to .com). In any case, someone with a lot of money can prevail just by threatening to sue.  The self-proclaimed "most powerful man in the world" has done that and you can Google it. I'm not sure what people are arguing here, that AVSIM hire a lawyer to trademark the term "AVSIM" in all possible jurisdictions?  I'm am perfectly fine with what's been said, that those other sites are copycat impersonators and no one should reward them by visiting. You can visit if   you like. The Internet has basically become a completely unpoliced mess.

Frank Schilling or Kevin Ham? There's been a lot of "most powerful man in the world" with regards to domain squatting.

I suspect Lebron doesn't care about the domain, otherwise he would have gone after Under Armour by now. Kudos to them for making it point at Steph Curry's shoes.

I was arguing that Jim mentioned that these websites are violation of their name copyrights. But I'm unable to find any evidence to support such a claim and none have been provided.

It would be like saying: "You cannot link to commercial websites of flight simulation products unless they support the page."

The "Russians", not my chosen description, are a very talented and generous part of the flight simulation community whose work should be treated with the respect that it deserves.

would put me more in fear of the incompetence of the agency that issued it than of the site that allegedly hosted it.

Avsim has a policy of steering away from politically motivated posts, for tried and tested good reason. My comment was in jest - you should do the same.

I have been on the avsim.ru site a couple of times but in all honesty I don't fly in that part of the World so haven't really explored the library there and couldn't comment on the general overall feel and thrust of the site.

I'm sure Jim felt sufficiently motivated to make his original post - and I for one, applaud him for doing so. I'm sure we can all be friends - united in our simulator activities - so let's get on with doing just that.

I agree, the name thing is something AVSIM should be rightly concerned about, but don't make false allegations that something nefarious is going on at the other site, with no evidence to prove it.  That's all i'm saying.
