June 1, 200620 yr Anyone have an comments on how this product is? I'm a huge fan of P51's and I stumbled across this! Also, how does it compare to RealAir's Spit (that's the only WWII fighter I have). Thanks! Image Coming... KregE | B757/767 FO
June 1, 200620 yr I have both. The Spit is a little better (flight model, smooth gauges & detailed VC are highlights for me), although the P51 is pretty darn good too. As you might expect, the P51 has a higher roll rate and when loaded with fuel and weapons is pretty unforgiving (can you spell S.P.I.N.?). Overall I guess the P51 has higher performance but then again it was the newer design. One good thing about both planes is their excellent frame rates. Really an achievement considering the realism and level of detail.I have no doubt that you will enjoy the P51. While the RAS Spit has almost attained legendary status, the P51 is right up there, with no major shortcomings at all. Love the Merlin engine sound. June 1, 200620 yr Also consider the SkyUnlimited P51, which also comes in Tuskegee colours and has several variants. None have the bubble canopy though as these are earlier models. But they are a sweet bird all the same.
June 1, 200620 yr The Mustang is superb, have you read the review?http://www.avsim.com/pages/0505/**/**.htmAlso there's a P47 review today :)Eagle
June 1, 200620 yr I have a review up over at SimHQ.com also, check the archives. It's a great add-on, first rate product as is just about anything from shockwave.Hornit
June 1, 200620 yr Talking about stumbling across, I found Iris Flight Simulation Software after an announcement here at Avsim yesterday. Looks like their products are DSB-like but with what DSB totally lacked back then
June 1, 200620 yr Thanks guys! I decided to get it! I'm pleased overall, even though it is not that next notch up like the RAS Spit. Handling is funky to me :(Thanks for all the input :D Image Coming... KregE | B757/767 FO
June 1, 200620 yr Shockwave are quite a few steps up from DSB/IRIS, no comparison. The IRIS P-40 has a great exterior, but the VC doesn't even come close to the level of detail that any Shockwave product has.If anyone else of thinking of the Mustang, they have a new package coming out which includes the Mustang, a Zero, the P-47, a Spitfire, and a 109, all at a great price.http://www.shockwaveproductions.com/store/wwiifighters/ Regards, MichaelKDFWhttp://www.calvirair.com/mcpics/tfbeta.jpg Best, Michael KDFW
June 1, 200620 yr >Thanks guys! I decided to get it! I'm pleased overall, even>though it is not that next notch up like the RAS Spit. >Handling is funky to me :(>>Thanks for all the input :DThat is also true in the real P-51D, That is because of the center fuel tank! The plane is much less maneuverable with it loaded. (As was the real one) On long missions, the pilots would burn off the fuel in the center tank prior to going into battle. This is actually modelled quite well. Try reducing the fuel in the center tank, and she'll be more responsive. Check out the videos on my web page below, to see what it's like flying the real thing!!Also there is a major update to this model scheduled soon that should make it even better!! If you hadn't purchased it yet, Shockwave is coming out with a ** WWII Fighters package, that will include the updated P-51D as well as the P-47 and a Spitfire! It would be interesting to see how it stacks up to the Real Air Spit! Thanks Tom My Youtube Videos! http://www.youtube.com/user/tf51d
June 1, 200620 yr I'm no expert on this plane - but if you also get the H model - watchout for the torque on takeoff. Took me a while to figure out why the plane was rolling so quickly at full throttle immediately after lift off.Yes, I know I didn't RTFM.The P-51 is a really good plane that you don't have to be an expert to fly - but has good enough detail and modeling to keep experts happy.A relatively rare occurence in the FS world in my experience.
June 1, 200620 yr First of all, the P-51 has been my favorite aircraft since childhood. And I'm one of those, born shortly after the war (WWII) kids, whose father owned a WWII training aircraft, and many days were spent at the airport.I've also had the pleasure of a 45 min. flight in a 1944 P-51D, including loops & rolls.But.......... I rank the RealAir Spitfire a bit ahead in the handeling department & overall sensation of "implied" feel. I think the RealAir Spit is about as fun as it get's, to land a simulated airplane. The RealAir is perect with that sensation of control of power & weight while getting those last few feet down to the runway surface.I'm also a bit put off by the simulated P-51's tendency to automatically lock the brakes & head over on it's nose, no matter how much up elevator is applied & the fact I'm not jamming the brakes. It's like a "script", that once in motion, it follows through, despite inputs from the pilot. The simulated diameter of the prop in the VC mode, could be increased also, IMO, as the blades are rather large diameter when viewed from the cockpit. There are probably some updates since my thoughts on the P-51 model have taken place. It's been well over a year since I purchased it.L.Adamson
June 1, 200620 yr I've bought the P-40. Nice exterior and tons of repaints, the VC is good enough, "RealAIr smooth" if you see what I mean but there is a small flaw in the construction which makes you see thru the fuselage in the cockpit if you move the seat. Nice sound package. The flight modeling needs a lot more work, that's the weakest point AFAIC.Bottom line ? at least two WBs in this category are far above, the RA Spit' and the ** P-47.
