FSX + FS9 scenery

Featured Replies

Experimenting with FS9 scenery. Loaded FSG Hawaii mesh, megascenery honolulu photo landclass and objects, and Lago PHNL.Objects, mesh, and airport show, but no ground textures. In the ultralight am getting 0.8 FPS, giving new meaning to "slideshow"!scott s..

Well, considering there's no "world" outside the limited, circumscribed area of the demo, I'm not terribly surprised... :-lol

Hawaii is in the pacific, way out of the demo area which is in the carribean. ;)

Bill, I think you can install new scenery and go to it (e.g. from the map display). I tried sof my old scenery. The terrain mesh displays okay, buildings are transparent, but the generic textures don't work as the ground is black. It's probably because FSX uses a different format. Best regards, Chris

Only enough was included for the area being represented... ;)

It should obvious to everyone that trying to install older version sceneries to an unfinished limited functionality demo is nothing but waste of time. Even worse if assumptions about the final version are made.

Actually, no, it wasn't obvious to me. In this case, I was using photo scenery, which includes all the textures, so I wasn't relying on any landclass file or landclass textrues. I note the demo includes worldlc.bgl, worldwc.bgl and dem4km.bgl, suggesting the same basic framework. I was assuming vectored polygons might not work, which is why I tried a photoscenery install. It could be that my FS9 textures are 256x256, while the landclass textures in the demo are 1024x1024 that maybe the higher res is required.Interestingly, the Lago PHNL includes some SCASM-style ground poly, which are drawn. So I tried Shez' just released KONT with default mesh:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/154106.jpgI was wondering if installing some landclass might help. I copied over some of the demop default textures into other texturefilenames consistent with the FS9 worldlc.bgl dfinitions for KONT (landclass 51, 110, 121) and started up with ntfilemon running. I didn't see FSX try to access worldlc.bgl at all, only St Maarten Aerial.bgl. Maybe something is coded into that file to force the rest of the wrold to be "untextured". scott s..

I included the textures used by my scenery in Addon Scenerytexture but it doesn't work, the ground is black. I've tried to open the FSX generic textures in several utilities such as DXTBMP and DxTex but no joy. It certainly looks like the FSX .bmp textures are a different format. After all, DXTBMP has no problem opening the FS2004 generic textures. By the way, does anyone know a utility that can successfully open these textures? Or will we have to wait for the SDK's? Best regards, Chris

I imported my Vancouver scenery and the results were quite interesting. To my pleasant surprise the buildings seemed to come in okay, in fact the textures seemed to be a bit more vivid. My CYVR buildings were all made with EOD or NovaSim, converted to API's, placed and compiled in Airport, so it looks as though there may be hope for earlier sceneries which are not XML related. I wonder whether Vancouver might be one of the detailed airports being close to MS "home".But at ground level, I am unable to make any kind of assessment since there is no FSX default scenery in place in the Pacific NW region. I imported Vancouver+ and all the buildings show and the North Shore mountains show up but without textures, but anything related to the ground does not have any textures or form to show yet.The scenery library seems to work as before but the FSX demo scenery.cfg file in its default folder remains unchanged. I was eventually directed to the active scenery.cfg file in C:Documents and SettingsAllUsersApplication DataMicrosoftFSXDemoScenery.cfg. I am really impressed with the water textures at St Maarten, and FSX is going to be a big leap forward to those who normally don't deal with addons.NigelVancouver
