July 23, 200619 yr hi alli know vista will only support directx10 and you need a GPU card for direct x10, having said that do you think there is a real disadvantage in playing FSX in DirectX9 only on a super high computer or something fast,i mean what specific eye candy will i miss out on if i dont upgrade to DirectX10 in FSX? July 23, 200619 yr >i mean what specific eye candy will i miss out on if i dont>upgrade to DirectX10 in FSX?From what I read,,,lots! A new Shader version and much more. Thats why I am biting the bullet and waiting. The first time I fire up FSX, its gonnna be on a new screaming machine with Vista and DX10 and the hardware to run it. I may have to wait till Spring 07 but it is worth it. My OCD will not allow anything else! Eric
July 24, 200619 yr That seems a bit extreme, my friend.Even the DX9 version of FSX appears to be a huge improvement over 2004.

July 24, 200619 yr >hi all>>i know vista will only support directx10 and you need a GPU>card for direct x10,No, you don't need a DX10 card to run Vista. Vista supports DX9 etc. etc.>real disadvantage in playing FSX in DirectX9 only on a super>high computer or something fast,>>i mean what specific eye candy will i miss out on if i dont>upgrade to DirectX10 in FSX?The DX10 subtle lighting effects look so much better to me. That was the biggest thing I noticed. I guess that's the new shader model that was mentioned...Rhett Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
July 24, 200619 yr ok, i know some of you guys are real graphics freaks and see the small details like different lighting on an aircraft blah blah blah, but i am not like that, yes i want a 'live environment' with cars / ground vehicles etc but i am not too fussed with things like lighting, so you think i should spend the money for Direct X10 ? July 24, 200619 yr Hi,Wait until May 07 when your system is 2 years old. Vista will have been out, the FSX patch released hopefully and hardware calmed down. Then watch the screenshots and videos and see what you think.Hope this helps,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://dot.kelder.net:8080/fseconomy/
July 24, 200619 yr This is what I like to hear:"ExtremeTech: We know it's still the early days of DX10, while DX9 is tried and true by now, but does your team find DX10 easier to work with than DX9? Godager: Many things are easier to work with on DX10. We can move several things from the CPU onto the GPU, like pre-skinned characters; geometry shaders will save bandwidth, texture arrays will save draw calls, and it's a generally more-efficient API. All this adds to a more effective rendering engine, giving the programmers more freedom to do other things they want. We are quite excited about being among the forerunners in DX10 game development and hope to be able to give players a richer, fuller experience when they invest in this hardware."RH

You say Vista will only support directx10 and that you will have to have a dx10 graphics card. Does this mean my Geforce 6800GT won't work at all with Vista? Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I wanted to make sure I understood things correctly. I ran the Vista advisor program and it says I'm ready as is for the Vista Ultimate version.KP
July 24, 200619 yr Never mind. Went to the BFG Tech website (maker of my card) and it says my card is Vista ready.KP
July 24, 200619 yr Vista works with DX9 hardware (and below on some), as Beta 2 and newer builds, run just fine. It even uses the advanced Aero Glass visuals with the lower grade hardware. DX10 is going to be a Vista only release. No XP version of DX10 will be available. DX10 uses the core Vista processes to operate. So, in order to use DX10, you need Vista, but Vista does not require DX10 hardware. :) Simple, but the point is there. DX10 will add a lot of visual effects not seen in the DX9 version, as well as speed things up a bit. I see the enthusiasts grabbing DX10 hardware as it is released, and gain mainstream share the 2nd or 3rd gen/refresh. There will be some lower end DX10 hardware, but prices won't be too low for a while. For me, though, it's time for an upgrade. I will be buying the latest and greatest for FSX. I made up my mind last winter to wait until FSX comes out to upgrade and that's what I'm doing. I'm putting all my upgrade money into savings, and upgrading all at once this fall. When others ask about it, I recommend they wait until at least the second release of DX10 hardware (or a few months after the first). See what they will be getting, driver updates, etc.
July 24, 200619 yr Jim has it right...once DX10 and FSX are out, look at the screenshots and compare. That way you can see if you want to make that upgrade or not. Everyone has their own preferences.Rhett Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB

July 24, 200619 yr Thanks for the info. I'm sure I'm going to want a new video card to take advantage of all that, but I just spent $400 on this card not all that long ago and am going to have trouble making that kind of expense again so soon.KP
