May 31, 20197 yr Hello to you all, I am very well aware that this topic has been discussed many times before. I do however, want to just query and comment on the following. I assume (could well be wrong) that Austin or a senior staff member nominated High(head)winds CDN for his download server platform. I am wondering whether or not, he is seriously proud of his/her decision given the astounding download speeds generated by that platform. I have just spent 37 hours downloading a second copy (Australian/Indonesian scenery only) to reach "about 20 minutes remaining" and then have a server error and please start again or contact the server. During this download I noticed the incredible download speeds as low as 5kbs (yes 5kbs) and as high as 113kbs (highest speed noted) I do not have a speedy internet service here in Indonesia but I am able to stream movies etc with no problems. Given also the huge (I believe) number of comments on this very subject, I am wondering (pleading?) if there are any contemplated changes afoot to change the download provider. In all reality, I could probably walk to Canada(?) pick up the DVDs and get home before a download from CDN completes. I am not looking to start a war on this subject, and really do not want to provoke any further comments on the download speeds. Rather, I am looking to focus on if there any thoughts on replacing Highwinds CDN or what the actual problem is there. Is it only a single channel download or simply an inadequate bandwidth. I know this sounds like a whinge and it probably is, but I am genuinely intrigued by the perceived acceptance of this abysmal performance by Xplane. Regards to all Tony Chilcott Tony Chilcott. May 31, 20197 yr The fact you are posting it everywhere well it doesnt sound like anything else. I have had no issues .
May 31, 20197 yr The reason why I used Steam with X-Plane... A lot faster and effective... Flying gliders since 1980 Flightsimming since 1992 AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)
May 31, 20197 yr I have that issue but it's not so bad as you describe, sometimes it will give a connection error or the speed will suddenly drop but works fine at least 70-80% of the time. Probably for Asia we might be connecting to a different CDN server. Ryzen 5 1600x - 16GB DDR4 - RTX 3050 8GB - MSI Gaming Plus
May 31, 20197 yr Highwinds CDN is constantly fast for me, e.g. for ORBX downloads I always get 11-12 MB/s (Western EU). Seems there must be other reasons (contract?).

I have had no issues . mjrhealth, I am incredibly happy for you Jcomm, The problem, as I see it, with steam, is the fact that you can only use steam addons for the entire XPlane platform. which is somewhat limiting even though potentially cheaper. HumptyDumpty, Honestly, I have no idea. You my well be right. However, I re-raised this topic because I am not alone commenting about slow download speeds. The fact remains, however, that despite many comments, there does not appear to be any action being taken to rectify the slow downloads. I am still wondering if any further action is being contemplated. Regards Tony Tony Chilcott. My System. Motherboard. ASRock Taichi X570 CPU Ryzen 9 3900x (not yet overclocked). Regards Tony Laminar have no control over the internet, speeds vary all over the world, time of day, maintenance severs throttling customers etc, Not laminar doing.Of course you could buy a direct fibre to your home and you still wont have any grantees, Its not perfect for everyone, complaining isnt going to fix it.
May 31, 20197 yr Author mjrhealth, OK 1. I am very aware that Laminar does not control the Internet 2. Fibre Optics at receiving end certainly is not going to fix it. Problem (whatever the problem is) is the sending server. 3. Laminar (I believe) gives the contract to Highwinds CDN. If so, is this decision in any way under review given the number of complaints. This, bear in mind, is what the topic is actually about. 4. If nobody complains, NOTHING happens because everybody is believed to be happy. So,complaining (or letting the world know) is possibly the first step to resolution, and I did NOT take the first step. Mate, again, I did not want to start a war with this topic, with you or anybody else. I am just wondering if anything is under review to sort this out. Regards with respect Tony Tony Chilcott. May 31, 20197 yr I think your best bet is to take this complaint directly to Laminar. Thank you. Rick $Silver Donor EAA 1317610 I7-7700K @ 4.5ghz, MSI Z270 Gaming MB, 32gb 3200, Geforce RTX2080 Super O/C, 28" Samsung 4k Monitor, Various SSD, HD, and peripherals
