QW 787 ILS Question

Featured Replies

If I just want to do an ILS on the fly does anybody know how to manually set the ILS in this plane?  I'm running into a problem.  It is staying in auto mode and the field next to the ILS in the FMC is just saying PARK and will not accept any manual scratchpad entries.  I'm looking to key in specific ILS frequencies.  I tried posting to the QW forum, but not getting help.  Thanks.

thanks very much for the reply.  Unfortunately this only really explains automatic mode and how it works with autopilot.  I'm literally just looking to find a way to enter a frequency as my ILS and manually fly it.

Should be CDU NAVRAD page.  Scratpad desired Frequency and course XXX.XX/XXX and place is LLSK 4.  Worked for me without issues.

Had a couple of other questions.  Put this same query into the QW forum, but sometimes that forum isn't responded to as heavily as this one so thought i would try here.

Was attempting to fly out of MSP on the SCHEP9 departure.  You can see that this procedure starts with an assigned heading and so on.  I programmed the DP into my flightplan as published.  But I took off and the autopilot LNAV continued to fly the runway heading instead of making the turn to begin the DP.  What did I do wrong?  My 2nd question.  If I wanted to skip a few waypoints on my flightplan and just fly flightplan direct from...  How would I do that?  So say my Flight plan was A-B-C-D-E-F.  If I was on the B-C leg and the controller cleared me to flightplan direct from E.

Really appreciate your help.

Was your initial course within 5 degrees of the SCHEP9 departure heading? In other words, was LNAV actually engaged? I have made that mistake more than once.....

Thanks.  Not at my sim computer now.  But I was taking off on 30L.  I am confused by this departure to begin with.  I just flew runway heading with LNAV selected.  The first leg just had RADAR listed as the waypoint.  Do I need to edit that waypoint prior?

Also, do you know anything about my 2nd question?

Thanks for your reply.

did it say RADAR or VECTORS?

What was the 2nd leg? I'm guessing HUGIR. If so, you needed to select HUGIR, and then press RADAR (or VECTORS). That will move HUGIR from 2nd to 1st. Once you've done that, hit execute and the plane should fly the SID. Depending on what ATC program you're using (if any) you may be assigned to "fly runway heading" or "turn to heading XXX" after departure. That's where the vectors comes in. If ATC just tells you to fly the departure, then you need to kill the first leg that's expecting you to follow ATC instructions rather than sticking to the published procedure right away.

helpful.  Think it just said RADAR.  I normally use VATSIM.  In this instance I was using vatsim but there was no active departure control.  But let's say ATC did assign a heading.  Is that something that would need to be put in the RADAR leg of the FMC?

No, you just use the HDG selector knob and then click it once you have the correct heading dialed in.

So would my steps be to delete the radar leg out of the FMC.  Use HDG selector knob and click once dialed in.  Fly that on departure.  Then when cleared by ATC click LNAV to resume the DP?

Close. Use the HDG selector knob to follow ATC instructions. When instructed to resume own nav or fly the departure click HUGIR, then click RADAR to move HUGIR to the #1 position, then click execute. If LNAV isn't lit up, click it at that point.

"I'm looking to key in specific ILS frequencies."

As mentioned above  there are several ways to manually select a specific ILS vector. The following is how I do it.

Look to the forward left panel with "Clock" "Map" "Mic" switches.

Select Mic switch. You can set all radios from here if you desire. Sometimes you have to click it a few times before the 2D window pops up. When the 2D window pops up click on NAV button twice until you see ALTN NAV RADIO (page 2/2).

Turn on the radio (ON<-->OFF). Keypad the ILS frequency (with the 2D keypad) and select upper left (ILS-GLS) button. If you make a mistake just use the clear button and re-enter frequency. This will display the new frequency there. Then do the same for the Course. Close the window (small X in the upper right corner), or the same "MIC" switch and all is set for chosen ILS vectors.

No need for FMC interaction if you need to manually set the ILS.

You can also set the ILS through the info page on the EICAS panel as well. Click on INFO. Then APP CONFIG. Then select (with virtual cockpit CDU keypad) the airport. Then the runway and/or approach if you want.

Cheers

Thanks. Perfect guys. Already resolved the ils. By 2nd part of question meant how to skip flight plan legs of atc gives me fly flightplan direct from etc. Would I be able to do what eslader said above for that also?  Or do you just erase the waypoints that are now being skipped in the flight plan

Here is an example:

Flightplan:

PEKUE PIPPN ROTTN PWE J64 HLC ALS TBC JASSE Q90 DNERO ANJLL4

Let's say I'm currently between PIPPN and ROTTN.  And ATC says fly direct ALS and as filed.  What's the procedure in the FMC for that?
