Kobe Bryant killed in helicopter crash

Featured Replies

Unfortunately, the bottom line is he flew into conditions that he couldn't handle regardless of certifications.  it's too bad.

Help me understand this. Both the pilot and the aircraft are IFR certified. But the pilot in almost zero visibility conditions sticks to VFR because of some part 135 regulation? Doesn't sound right to me................

Hello,

Having been IFR qualified and being current are two different things. If you work for a  VFR  only operator, there will be no operator funded IFR training/testing  and you will quickly loose your proficiency ....(and qualification).

Exactly. Finally someone that understands the situation. Has it been disclosed the last time this pilot actually flew IFR or even instructed instrument flying in a helicopter? I have an IFR rating but haven't logged any instrument time in nearly 35 years!

I don't recall any reports of near zero vis. As they approach the rising terrain or lower cloud before that fateful left turn overhead Las Virgenes Rd, he has a couple of seconds to decide what to do. Calling for a pop up IFR clearance below radar coverage in busy airspace doesn't happen instantly and even if he had it doesn't instantly get them out of danger as you still need to get from down in the murk to a safe IFR altitude. Who knows, a couple miles back when over the 101, it may have looked good enough. It's terribly unfortunate, but it does happen.

Kobe Bryant was MJ in HD.

I'm just angry and wondering when are Pilot's going to stop forgetting the fundamentals. This should have been avoided.

I just saw Air Disasters Season 17 Episode 10 and I had to relive the moment.

It does a good job explaining why the Pilot chose to fly and how "Spacial Disorientation" was the cause of the crash.
