Boom, there goes my job...

Alan, it must be some relief for you. It's good to see that Menzies seem to have acted remarkably quickly following the Chancellor's announcement. I hope other employers are doing the same.

hmmm

I've been furlough 'd. But my employer is asking us to go into work on certain days....therefore still working.

Is that even legal?

I ask because the first bullet point states that you would not have undertaken any form of work duties since being layed off / furlough'd in order to qualify.

So would i be nullifying myself if i show up, to work??

Well, just a bit of an update on this thread's original post. Got this letter today. So whilst not great news for aviation at large, it is not as bad news as it could be from a personal standpoint, particularly given that I really do like my job and the company I work for is very good.

Alan that is indeed wonderful news that you won't have to suffer too much during the remaining months of this crisis!

Unfortunately, in my case since I only receive a pitiful, paltry, pittance of $680/month Social Security, I won't qualify for the proposed $1,200/month relief check since I don't have to file income tax each year. SS is not taxable so why waste my time and the government's time filing for no purpose? I may still file a return for 2019 anyway though. Maybe it might trigger me into being included. It can't hurt to try! 😇

Could be.. It may also mean that your employer won't qualify for the 80% wage payment if they've elected not to shut down (and thus can afford to pay the normal salary bill??). Is the business classed as a key business and you're a key worker?

I don't know your circumstances, nor your employer's business, so I'm just guessing based on what I heard at the company I work for.

Well, I now have to correct myself at least with regards to my situation. I just read on the AARP website that:

Quote

If you are receiving Social Security benefits but didn’t file taxes in 2018 or 2019, you will be eligible to receive a stimulus check without a tax return based on data available to the IRS from your annual Social Security benefits statement. The government will send you a direct deposit or check using the information from your Form SSA-1099 Social Security Benefit Statement or your Form RRB-1099 Social Security Equivalent Benefit Statement. You will not have to file a 2019 tax return to get a stimulus check.

This is fantastic news for those of us in the US who's only source of income is our monthly Social Security check. This is not a one-off event either; it should be direct deposited each month until the crisis is resolved one way or another.

It has also prompted me to renew my membership in AARP (American Association of Retired People). I guess that $45 for a five year membership is a good investment, since it was AARP's lobbying efforts that got Congress to include SS, Disabled, and SSI recipents in the relief package. That's a load off my mind. I wasn't looking forward to having to live out of my 1998 Toyota Camry! 😅

A brighter note for myself, similar to Chock. My boss phoned me earlier for my email so he could send me a furlough letter. I'll be getting the 80% of my wage on the 31st March (payday is the last working day of each month), and for the foreseeable. We weren't sure if any of us would be getting anything as sales had taken a dive recently, prior to the pandemic.

That's good to hear. Not great of course being stuck at home, but at least all those NI contributions and Income Tax that have been taken out of our wages for years are paying dividends now, instead of only going to people who never get off their @ss to work lol.
