Recommended settings for variable refresh rate

FPS is range is 40-60FPS in the VC (40 is the lowest I've seen but even this doesn't matter anymore, but now that G-Sync actually works you don't have to care about it anymore)

You must use rather low settings. I still get below 30FPS with my settings in v5 on certain heavy airports with AI traffic and an addon such as PMDG. And sadly, my G-Sync monitor is one of the earlier generations that support G-Sync only from 30FPS/Hz upwards. I will nevertheless once try it, but I think I will be back to the flickering already observed in v4.5, when G-Sync suddenly gets active when FPS are above 30 and suddenly gets deactivated when FPS drop below 30 (and the monitor jumps to the default 120Hz).

Yeah. I think you’re gonna need a new G-Sync monitor for P3D if you’re dropping below 30fps. Luckily mine works all the way from 1hz.

ps I’m at almost maxed settings at 60fps, with Orbx true earth, haven’t added any AI or third party plane yet, but I am using true sky with bad weather theme loaded. (I9900KS 5GhZ, 2080ti and 32gb ram)

Pps the flickering is cause because as the Hz drops the brightness of the monitor gets darker....

For me, the thought of running P3D @ 60 frames per second with very high detail scenery/airports/AI planes enabled is a bit like finding the holy grail in my next box of crunchy nut cornflakes.....and that's with calm winds and clear skies......and at 1080p resolution.

Looks like I’ve found the holy grail then...or close enough to it. I’m not even looking at the FPS now to be honest it’s that smooth.

Wish there was a workaround for Freesync (G-Sync compatible) monitors that have a narrower range. My monitor only has a base of 48hz and upper limit of 100hz and my avg fps is 30-40s so only gets activated when above 48fps although it does look smoother with VRR ticked.  But pretty sure its hardware limited and no way to force it down with software.

I think it's highly individual what "low settings" are, but compared to people with newer CPUs, the settings may be low (You saw the screenshots, your decision). But they're good enough for me and higher as my v4 Settings. So while the new Sim not only looks better for me, I get a smoother and overall better experience. It's not just more FPS. So while I could list you my settings (and you would be even surprised maybe, because they are not that low), I think what everybody can translate from this is if you have a Display that supports it, activate the new VRR Setting and you will love P3D v5 HF1. I think it will be an improvement for everybody. You have to test it by yourself.

Apologies, the whole thing is maybe hard to describe, but hand-flying in P3D now (even the big airliners) is so much fun. Almost like you got a new Honeycomb-Yoke or something else 😄 It's as smooth as X-Plane. All the years I wished P3D would be as smooth as X-Plane for me and this is actually true now.

EDIT: I mean, I'm flying right now. ORBX Global + OpenLC, somewhere over northern Italy directed to Paris on VATSIM. This is how "low" it looks right now. FPS fluctuating from 45-59 in the VC. Sorry for the clouds (it's still TrueSky on Ultra), this is the FSRealWX until ActiveSky drops 😉 I tried to make a video (because that would be better) but this doesn't work well.

0OPMwEV.pngUlAv3zT.png

EDIT2: FPS even better with overcast cloud layer (Weather Update popped in) 😄 No difference in smoothness (super smooth)

I agree with this 100% - I flew around Seattle area (Orbx PNW) from KSEA to CYVR last night in the Turbine Duke, and the settings I ran would have been a stuttery frustrating mess in previous versions;  absolutely smooth in v5 HF1. Same with a short little flight I did from Flightbeam KIAD to default KDCA with Orbx Base and OpenLC (another notorious fps "black hole" area in P3D).  I've been waiting through 2 full versions of P3D (at least) to finally get to this point, but better late than never I guess.

Yeah, it's amazing. I'm flying the PMDG 777 right now over Europe. I have a G-Sync Monitor and used the G-Sync Setting in the Driver all the years before. I "thought" it worked in the previous versions, because my Acer Monitor has a built-in refresh-rate display which seemed to be linked to the FPS in the past... it was still not smooth, though no tearing.

But now with P3D v5 HF1, I deleted all my P3D related Driver Settings, V-Sync OFF, Frames Unlimited and VRR to on. It's too good to be true, it's buttery smooth with this setting enabled, just wow 😮 I always wondered why P3D "felt" so stuttery in comparison to X-Plane, but this is completly gone now. I'm constantly smiling, because I enjoy it so much. Textures crisp and sharp even on Cruise Altitude, doesn't matter if it's near or in the distance. Full Scenery with ORBX (Global + OpenLC + FTX Region), FPS is range is 40-60FPS in the VC (40 is the lowest I've seen but even this doesn't matter anymore, but now that G-Sync actually works you don't have to care about it anymore), 70-110 FPS External View. CPU is an very old i7-2600k @ 4,5 GHz, GPU RTX 2070. TrueSky enabled, Ultra Cloud Texture Resolution.

Yes, due to the old CPU the FPS are fluctuating, but that's where the VRR Options really helps, you just don't notice anymore. Seems like locking FPS and messing around with FTFF is now obsolete with native VRR support. Feels like I upgraded my PC.

I never thought this would be possible, but I'm really happy with v5 now. Only ActiveSky and some official plane support is missing, otherwise.. Nice.:)

I agree, yours is the correct answer Ian - this is my experience so far with v5 HF1 as well, though I was running with fps target set at 100 because of my 100Hz monitor (I have the same resolution and monitor size as you).  I might try the unlimited frames based on your experience - that didn't work well with Gsync in 4.5, but it may very well be working properly now in v5.  The frame timing does look qualitatively more consistent - in previous versions I used to be able to see the little "surges" in fps even when the image was not stuttering, but those "speed ups" and "slow downs" are very rarely noticeable now.

I just did a flight where I started out at 70-80 fps, and flew somewhere more dense; when I opened up shift-Z at the end of the flight, I was shocked to see that my frames were in the low 40's... because it was no less smooth in that lower range than it was at double the fps.  Big improvement, because in v4 and earlier I could easily see when my frames were dipping down close to 40.  I agree, this a lot like the latest Xplane beta now.

The key settings for a Gsync monitor I think:

- Vsync and TB OFF in P3D (Vsync is at best redundant, and TB is unnecessary that is what VRR is for)

- VRR checked ON in P3D (THANK YOU LOCKHEED MARTIN FOR THIS FINALLY!!!)

- Gsync ON globally in Nvidia Control Panel for BOTH windowed and full screen (important becuase P3D is not a true full screen app, it is borderless windowed)

- Vsync ON but TB OFF in Nvidia Control Panel (to prevent tearing if you perchance exceed the refresh rate)

It was a long wait for L-M to finally figure out how to take advantage of variable-refresh technology, but it seems they have. Hallelujah!

I am thinking of buying that monitor from Alienware.

It looks really good. Is the GSYNC range all the way down to 1FPS or is it limited to 30-40 like other monitors?

I’m using an acer Z35P ultrawide. It has variable refresh rate way down to 1hz. All way up to 120hz.

Hi Mark - it is only down to 30Hz for Gsync range, but I am OK with that as my eyes/brain seem very sensitive to sub-30Hz.  If I can't get to 30fps in a game, I reduce settings.  I am not sure that I would find variable refresh rates that low useful, but that is just my preference.

The image quality on the monitor is very good - I have had no issues and LOVE the ultrawide aspect ratio.  I stopped using TrackIR for P3D because of the ultrawide in fact; with Chaseplane I found I don't really need it (still use TrackIR for air combat games like DCS though).  I don't overclock the refresh rate; 100Hz is more than enough for me (it can be OC'd up to 120).

I haven't tried any other UW monitors, so I can't give you a comparison or anything to other brands/models. But I definitely don't regret the purchase.

Thanks. Only difference in our specs is a 2080ti instead of your Titan XP 12GB. When I lock FPS to 30 with my current 30hz monitor its smooth so I dont think I will have any issues. My current GSYNC monitor only goes down to 40 so I notice at that point.

Went ahead and purchased it. IF it doesnt work like I think it will I can always return it. I will keep this one forever if its an amazing monitor.

The only thing that you may not like is giving up the 4k - antialiasing with P3D still isn't the greatest, though I think with the v5 hotfix I can run 4XSSAA more consistently. I have also tried DSR (4k downscaling) with this monitor and it looks very nice that way, though P3D v4 would stutter trying that. Haven't tried DSR with v5 yet.

But I absolutely love the ultrawide aspect ratio, and wouldn't go back - P3D in a 4k ultrawide, that could run Gsync with hardware that could drive 60fps would be nirvana.

I am excited and it was on sale thru dell so it will be here Tuesday. I’ll be excited to setup and give it a shot. Is there certain settings you use as far as nvidia goes etc?
