Any "Special Attachment" to an airport (s)?

Good one! Completely forgot to list Tokyo Narita RJAA. I was there last January on a connection back from Bangkok. First time Asia, too. I thought RJAA was just a stunningly beautiful airport. Everything in such good taste. Unfortunately I was not able to venture into Japan proper that trip, but I will come back one day for sure. Japan is currently my number one 'want to go' designation.

Japan is fantastic! Even went to a couple of Tokyo Giants baseball games. And the food is the best, great Sushi of course! I thought I heard that a new one was in development but I forget by who.

Cheers, Pete

Did you ever take off from Willard and fly out into the nothingness?   heh.

I remember being awed when the "Scenery Disks" came out, and I could fly in other places.

Yep, I still remember the excitement finally  heading north of Kankakee for the first time on the Amiga it must have been  what Christopher Columbus Felt like 😄

I fly out of KPHL to KACK (orbx airport), KBID (orbx), KABE, KMDT, KBUF, KROC, KROA, KRIC.  Home airports are KEWR, KTEB, and closest to home is KN07. I fly 208, 402C, B1900D, and sometimes ATR72.

I fly long haul JFK to EGLL and HECA.  My parents lived in Cairo in the 80s and I went twice  a year.

You sound a lot like me!  This is a regular routine of mine...out of KPHL and on to Harrisburg, Buffalo, Rochester, Newark, Teterboro and others.

Wonderful way to test new aircraft and addons....nothing terrible far.

From a flight simulator perspective I’ll always have a special attachment to KCMI university of Illinois- Willard Airport.

As a teenager I spent hours and hours and hours flying in and out of there on my C64 FS2 (tape edition).

I flew circuits on every runway and every single approach ILS,NDB and VOR over and over again , from the charts and tutorials contained in the excellent manuals.

The airport was just made up of white vector graphic lines on a green background but My imagination filled in the gaps. It looked like a real airport from the air with taxiways and parking, all the other airports in the cassette version were just runways, except I think Greater Kankakee  which also had taxiways.

A couple of times I’ve being coming back to the U.K. from California in my real world jet on a particularly southern routing and flown quite near KCMI. I’ve manually tuned in the  CMI ATIS and VOR to reminisce and thought how amazing the journey has been from flying at Willard as a school kid on my C64  learning everything I could  to now flying over the top of it for real at FL350 sat in the left seat of a 747.

(there’s an x-plane add on out soon for KCMI I’m looking forward to)

Passed just east of CMI a couple of years ago on a Delta flight from DTW to IAH, which brought back many memories of the Sublogic flight simulator 768-E4-D1-F-C926-410-F-A039-5-D7-DAD0831

Brilliant Jim , well spotted.

There’s been a few changes since  the C64 days, the new ramp and terminal and runway 32L .

I seem to remember there used to be another runway, did there also used to be a  36/18 runway ? or is it  just my bad memory

Yes there was. It was relatively short, and crossed both runway 4/22 and 14/32 at an angle. Not sure when it was decommissioned. It does not appear at all on the current FAA airport diagram, but you can see what is left of it crossing the runway 4 in the photo (near the left side).

As you may recall, the original MS/Sublogic flight sim had only 4 geographic sub-regions in the US, and each region had only one airport equipped with an ILS. CMI was the ILS airport for the default northern Illinois region, and I’m sure many of us who were around back then spent many hours practicing the ILS 32 approach.

Of course, at the time, Sublogic was based in Champaign/Urbana, IL. I believe that Bruce Artwick was a graduate of the U of Illinois there, so no surprise that CMI got the full treatment in the very first flight sim.

Then a few years later, the wonderful “Flight Assignment ATP” came out, covering the entire US, with ILSs at almost every airport... and mountains!

ESGP : This is where my first flight school was located at. So it will always be special. I bought it for FS2002 "Aerosofts Scandinavian Airports" back in the days.  Imagine taxiing behind a Ryan 737 during your first initial hours as a student  🥰

I was just wondering if you fly to or from an airport that has a "special attachment" to your life!  I just love flying to and from Liverpool, UK, because I've always loved the Beatles. I mean I really loved almost all of their wonderfully creative music since I saw them on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964!  I remember it so well.  I love flying to Europe....Poland (EPWA), Krakow,  Berlin, Frankfort, Bucharest (LROP) and Prague.  All places that have very special meaning to me because I've loved visiting every one of those places.

I also love Buffalo (KBUF), NY, because my wife and I have had such good memories when we visited Niagra Falls.  I just love flying into Buffalo, and getting on a helicopter, and flying to the Falls between Canada and the U.S.

I love flying to the cities where my Daughters (3 of them) live.  I fly to KISP, Long Island...because my 1 Daughter lives in Sea Cliff, Long Island.  I visit.  Then I fly to Newark, N.J. because a Daughter lives in Scotch Plains, N.J.  I visit.  Then I fly to Philadelphia, because my oldest Daughter live close to that in Bucks County, PA. I may even take a GA aircraft from Philly and fly to Pennridge Airport which is only within a few miles of her house. I visit.

I live in Pennsylvania, USA.  But I thought that I'd share with you why Flight Simming is so important to me.  Every day is an adventure, and it can be especially fun if you fly to and from airports that have a "special attachment" to your life.  I hope you all have special reasons for the places you fly to and from.

Stan besides EHAM it's KSFO for example, my son has several RW type ratings (747/737PG/NG/Ejets (E17X/19X) and when

being upfront when he was landing the mighty 747 and that approach makes it special 🙂
