Any "Special Attachment" to an airport (s)?

Featured Replies

Sure, here are a few:

CYHZ Halifax Int’l - my home airport, I’m love flying in and out of YHZ in whatever weather i can see out my window.

CYYZ/CYUL Toronto Pearson/Montreal Trudeau - airports i flew through quite a bit in real life on connecting flights and both very nicely done in P3D.

KJAC Jackson Hole - Never been there in real life but I love mountains and the short hop to ORBX KJAC from either Denver or Salt Lake City is one of my favourite short airline hops.  Somewhat challenging approach and departure.

MDPC Punta Cana - The first trip I took in real life to the Caribbean was to Punta Cana.  I love flying Canadian tourists to Punta Cana through the winter...direct flights from many secondary Canadian cities to keep things interesting.

Finally, the most obscure airport on my list, CFH4 Fox Harb’r - a small private airstrip in Nova Scotia that serves the Fox Harb’r resort.  I’ve had the opportunity to golf there a few times (most recently last weekend) and it’s an amazing place.  I had an errant tee shot on #9 that landed next to the runway...quite an interesting lie to say the least!  When we we’re unloading our (ground based) vehicle into our room we were treated to a Baron taking off about 100 feet away.  In flight sim i like to do imaginary short GA hops from YHZ as if I’m flying myself there to golf for the weekend.

Yes.   I thought about that before beginning this topic.  I've read a lot of things about tweaking, V5 problem, getting more FPS, etc.  I've also contributed to those topics as well.

However, I was hoping to get some positive, and as you say, "refreshing" responses to a topic from which we all can learn something, and try some airports we haven't tried before.

Stan

Great topic!

KSFB - current home airport.  Love to fly to/from airports around the SE US where family lives: KBWG, KBCT, KPDK,   Also love flying to/from the Bahamas especially replicating Steveo1Kinevo's flights.

Finally airports in/near places I've lived: KCSG, KATL, KBGM, KPBG, KBNA, & KRDU.   Love to imagine taking family and friends with me.

From a flight simulator perspective I’ll always have a special attachment to KCMI university of Illinois- Willard Airport.

As a teenager I spent hours and hours and hours flying in and out of there on my C64 FS2 (tape edition).

I flew circuits on every runway and every single approach ILS,NDB and VOR over and over again , from the charts and tutorials contained in the excellent manuals.

The airport was just made up of white vector graphic lines on a green background but My imagination filled in the gaps. It looked like a real airport from the air with taxiways and parking, all the other airports in the cassette version were just runways, except I think Greater Kankakee  which also had taxiways.

A couple of times I’ve being coming back to the U.K. from California in my real world jet on a particularly southern routing and flown quite near KCMI. I’ve manually tuned in the  CMI ATIS and VOR to reminisce and thought how amazing the journey has been from flying at Willard as a school kid on my C64  learning everything I could  to now flying over the top of it for real at FL350 sat in the left seat of a 747.

(there’s an x-plane add on out soon for KCMI I’m looking forward to)

  • Tel Aviv LLBG: Half my family is from Israel, and so I must have gone through LLBG at least 100 times. It will always be an important destination for me.

Right there with you on this one. I don't have nearly as much family there, and I haven't been since 2000, but I love flying into the airport. I'm really hoping the Tel Aviv skyline is depicted well in FS2020

My favorite airports are usually located in places I travel to or places I have lived

  • Cancun MMUN - This is the big one for me. My wife and I got married there 15 years ago, and we go there at least 1x per year staying in Cancun, Puerto Morelos, Playa Del Carmen or on Isla Mujeres. I know the airport like the back of my hand, at least from the tourist's point of view. I'd say 50% of my flights in P3D are to Cancun originating in Canada, the US or Mexico.
  • Detroit KDTW - My home airport. What's not to love
  • Washington National KDCA - I lived there for a while back in 2004. I'm really looking forward t this one in FS2020

If you look back over the years you will see a number of my posts where I beg developers to do CUN and DTW. I finally got my wish from FSimstudios and SSJ, but I can wait to see them (and their respective surrounding areas) in FS2020.

This talk of KCMI / Champaign-Willard reminds me of Frasca Field.  That existed in my Apple //e version of FS-II and I used to fly between Willard and Frasca.

In recent times, I guess KMIA.  El Dorado Furniture sign.  If you take off from Runway 9 in the LatinVFR KMIA you'll know what I'm talking about.  That was always my last sight on land before a cargo run to Central America.

For me it's the infamous Kai Tak, VHHH, RKSI, RJTT, Haneda, VTBS, VVTS. All these airports brings back a lot of memories for me.

Love Cancun.  Remember flying there about 8 years ago.  We stayed in the Riviera Maya, and visited the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza.  Wonderful trip.  I think I'll fly to Houston tomorrow....and then on to Cancun.  Thanks for reminding me of that one.

What about Meigs airfield... where many of us took our very first flightsimming lessons 🙂🙂

There’s a really nice payware Franca Field recently been released on x-plane by the same company that are working on KCMI.
Willard is also going to ship with a photoreal city of Urbana and surrounding area I believe.

Meigs used to off the end of the world for those of us on cassettes. 😀. We went as far north as Kankakee before the world stopped.

i think it wasn’t until the Amiga came out I got to fly from Meigs.

i love what orbx have done with their Meigs , recreating it as it was for nostalgic flight sim flights.

Yes, Bert.  Still fly to and from there occasionally since ORBX gave us a renewed Meigs.  It certainly brings back memories of my early days in flight simulation.    Good one!

Did you ever take off from Willard and fly out into the nothingness?   heh.

I remember being awed when the "Scenery Disks" came out, and I could fly in other places.

All of my favorites are airports I have been too, way to many to list all of course, but perhaps my favorites:

VHHH - First time I went to Asia when I visited Hong Kong.

OMDB - Looking forward to an updated version, especially for the city with the new Dubai Frame

EGKK - First time I traveled to Europe

EHAM - Been there twice, just an awesome airport

EKCH / ESSA / ENGM - When I took my wife to Norway, and we connected in EKCH and ESSA. We need a new ENGM

RJAA - Obviously not as good as some other developers, and we sorely need a new one

Good one! Completely forgot to list Tokyo Narita RJAA. I was there last January on a connection back from Bangkok. First time Asia, too. I thought RJAA was just a stunningly beautiful airport. Everything in such good taste. Unfortunately I was not able to venture into Japan proper that trip, but I will come back one day for sure. Japan is currently my number one 'want to go' designation.
