Liveries are now easier for Addon Makers to Create

GONE are the days where the end user had to modify the aircraft.cfg and carefully renumber the FLTSIM.X record, Asobo have created a truly wonderful way to package liveries as a VARIATION.

And it’s really easy to do.

Create a folder called: myname-livery-livername
Inside that folder create the following structure:
SimObjects\Airplanes\aircraft_liveryname\texture.myawesomelivery\
SimObjects\Airplanes\aircraft_liveryname\aircraft.cfg
layout.json
manifest.json

The manifest.json has this content:

JSON:

{
  "dependencies": [],
  "content_type": "AIRCRAFT",
  "title": "Livery Name",
  "manufacturer": "Aircraft Manufacturer",
  "creator": "Your Name",
  "package_version": "0.1.0",
  "minimum_game_version": "1.7.12",
  "release_notes": {
    "neutral": {
      "LastUpdate": "",
      "OlderHistory": ""
    }
  }
}

The aircraft.cfg has this content:

Code:

[VERSION]
major = 1
minor = 0

[VARIATION]
base_container = "..\<<Aircraft Directory>>"

[fltsim.0]
;your FLTSIM definition

Ok, he lost me just near where he said "And it's really easy to do."

Looks easy to me.

What is easy?

In p3d I haven't had to manual install since like version.. 2? In fsx I had to manually edit 1 file (the cfg file) and just copy paste from the painter the content and put it in the next number. This method looks like I have to go into TWO files, and edit a whole lotta things?

This is for addon makers creating livery packs. The end user will just need to plop the files/folders in, they won't need to edit anything.

Yeah that's my bad, sorry.

Edit: edited the title to be clearer.

So for painters this is easy? No it's not, not from where I'm sitting. And that's not even thinking about the actual painting. I've had several attempts to get going with some paints and the procedure kills any enthusiasm. I just give up. I'll leave it to the 10yr olds.

This is great news. No longer need to edit, or copy the original plane's aircraft.cfg file. Each livery can have it's own, and then point to the original aircraft.cfg

It must have been hell installing a new paint! 😵

The people making liveries for the a320n seem to be doing fine. There are paint kits out there now.

This is in no way whatsoever easier to create than the method used for FSX/P3D. I'll grant you that it's easier to install, but the creation process is frankly, a convoluted @rseache compared to copying a small section of a config file in notepad, pasting it below in the same file, then editing a few lines of it with an incremental number etc.

Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here

I dont think the painters understand it yet either because i downloaded some liveries and dropped their folders into my community folder and bam...base textures in my cockpit missing...cockpit model is all messed up when the plane loads, etc.

I'll pass on this "easier" thing...easier to drop in the texture folders and just make the texture entries into the original cfg.

This one doesn't that's for sure.

The textures for the default aircraft that are required for painting are completely nonsensical blobs that look like they were exported through MS Paint.  There is no logical, or illogical way to correctly paint anything.  I loved repainting the Lancair Legacy and 152.. I spent countless hours fawning over the possibilities and was inspired by @Ron Attwood himself.

The current texture scheme for the end user is impossible to create high quality, high resolution, high fidelity, COMPLEX, repaints.

Edit: I had to look up my own repaints..

Anything like this, inside and out with ANY of the default aircraft is impossible.  Again.. It's just blobs of color on the textures..

Nothing like this is possible right now and it's frustrating.. This is what I think @Ron Attwood is trying to say. The textures handed to us to work with are a joke that are 3 steps below a 3rd graders coloring book. There is absolutely NOTHING to work with
