Thoughts on CPU upgrade, it's depressing.

Well, it looks like my CPU is not the bottleneck anymore. It looks perfectly balanced with my GPU so I guess a new PC build would be the logical next step.

It's the primary reason why I'm still on an i7 2600K. If I can't get at least double the fps, it's not worth a 1K investment.

I'm not the only one lol

Try 4K ULTRA it eats the CPU for breakfast my i7 7700K at 4.8 was maxed out.

Don`t be surprised when users install 1500 dollars worth of GPU it`s your CPU that will be the bottleneck.

The answer is simple. 10850K/10900K + 3090. Resistance is futile. 🙂

Just upgraded to a 10900K on ASUS Z490 APEX MB. not in a hurry to upgrade my GPU.

This thread is SO in line with what's going on in my head 24/7 for the past few months! Glad I came across this first before starting a new thread.

I currently have a trusty old 4790k @ 4.5, a 1080ti and 16gb ram. Running off an ssd at 1440p on a 165hz monitor. MSFS exclusively. Average fps in GA planes is 45-65 and 15-40 in the big jets.

Basically as long as I don't want to fly a 747 out of LAX, I'm good! Really, really good in fact, which is why this upgrade business is driving me nuts! The whole reason for pursuing a new PC would be to get a smooth, high fps experience while piloting big jets at busy airports with lots of AI and enhanced scenery. And this is where the problems begin...

Firstly I'm not rich (I'm a truck driver) but cost is NO object, within reason of course. I'm a hard working adult with no kids, this is my only hobby and I'm always willing to get the best equipment available. Having said that, it seems as though the current (& soon to be released) best, is not much of an improvement in MSFS over my current rig.

If I watch 1 more youtube video showing a 10900k with a 3080/3090 in MSFS performing roughly the same as my setup (at 1440p), my head's going to explode!! From what I can gather from reading & watching way more cpu/gpu analysis pieces than I care to admit, it's basically going to cost me approximately $500 to $1000 per frame gained over my current system.... really!?

Every video I've seen shows the 10900k & 3080/3090 combo getting only about 5-10 more fps (at 1440p) with similar microstutters and pauses in heavy situations as my system. If you figure I need a new motherboard to move up to the 10900k, then new ram, then new gpu, plus at that point, I'm building a new system so...new fans, case, power supply, m.2 drives, etc. Well now we are talking $4-5000 for an average increase of, what ... 7fps!!!??

I get that MSFS still needs some major optimizations and dx12 is coming down the road but if anything, that makes me more confused. If my goal is to fly a 747 (at 1440p) out of Heathrow with AI traffic cranked all while looking around smoothly and enjoying myself, what on earth should I do? Maybe it will be a combination of software improvements (dx12, etc) and bleeding edge hardware (3080ti, etc) or maybe I'm just going to have to wait a few more cpu generations.

Honestly, I'm prepared to wait or buy whatever hardware will run MSFS the best, (10900k oc'd/ 64gb ram/ zen3 maybe/ 3090sli/3080ti 20gb etc...) but if its only going to be a few more fps than I'm currently getting along with all the same hiccups that I currently have, well... I just don't know?.. thanks for listening!
