So I thought about firing up P3D and/or XP last night...

You are misinformed.

XP is doing proper atmospheric scattering, not just mie around the sun. You can actually see the relevant code in one of the shaders. It did that since XP 10, so maybe even before Cliffs of Dover.

Regarding the other stuff in the list: usage of OSM data for scenery, HDR, 64 bits, deferred global lighting, were all either firsts or almost firsts for flight sims.

Note: I think MFS looks really incredible, and the discussions in this forum should only be devoted to it, but please don't spread misinformation about other products.

Then why is the game using these textures for the sky?

And why can I change the texture and get this in-game?

Its not doing anything like the precomputed atmospheric scattering that nearly every engine has adopted over the past decade.

AMD's new cards are coming and will likely have more VRAM.  Also it's likely nVIDIA or their partners will come out with versions of the 3070 and 3080 with more VRAM, the SKUs have already been seen showing up in some parts of the supply chain.

Agree that out of all the games out there is is likely the MSFS will benefit from the added VRAM, but there may be more economical ways to get that within the next few months vs the 3090.  I'd let this competition play out between the two companies for a little bit before making any big buys.

Cliffs of Dover did precomputed atmospheric scattering before any other sim. And that is assuming you consider xplane to be doing proper atmospheric scattering.... which it isn't. The game is just using a texture for the sky and then a bit of mie scattering for the bloom around the sun, hardly anything close to cutting edge for 2011.

Rise of Flight had 3d water before any other sim.

I'm really struggling to see any feature in that list that was a first by xplane besides atc and ai stuff.

Not aware of all flight sims out there, so i should probably rephrase what i wrote and limit to the 3 most known flight sims.

That list was a reference major sim overhaul within one major version that some with obvious lack of knowledge about what thet talk about claim to be not possible, happened a decade ago, history proves wrong.

Atmos math is currently bad in x-plane, but this last decade tech ain't worth badgering about now, rendering pipeline is on major overhauls finally :))))

Be aware if you change graphics settings in MSFS and hit save/apply, the value will revert back to whatever value is set in the MSFS UI (2 or lower).

The change is not staying ? I would assume you made the file read only after the edit ?

Also you have to have in sim on 200 before making the change to the cfg. file - hearing thats been working

Should not change after making it read only - but you knew that

Don’t set this file to read only, updates may not like that, especially if they need to modify, which they have done in prior updates ... bad idea, don’t do it!

Cheers, Rob

Yes thought of that last night I would remove read only before an update - your on it Rob

Dagnabbit! Here too.. It’s fár too much fun, watching cranky old dudes ( like me) rolling over one another in a giant furball, waving their Sim-Peens around..

And me? I make my own implausable planes in X-plane, do some virtual tourism in one of the many easy flying low&slow addons in FSX, and gawk at FS2020’s  lighting and really recognizable bits of our world ( allthewhile hoping the instance of Skynet that seems to reside in FS2020’s Autopilot doesn’t kill me in the process.. 😆)

Its not doing anything like the precomputed atmospheric scattering that nearly every engine has adopted over the past decade.

It's sort of an hybrid. It uses textures only for sky background colors, but calculates actual atmospheric scattering for the ground (mountains, etc.).

As I said, look at the shaders if you want to have confirmation of that.
