Leisurely flight.......UNTIL!!

Recommended Posts

Decided to take a leisurely spin around my stomping ground, with the intention of having brunch and a sea bath, only to be disappointed in the outcome.

Prepping for descent into TFFJ and planning to land on RW 28

Well we landed alright....BUT!!!

No one is hurt, but egos are slightly crushed

Well looks like two new engines and some speed tape should do the trick

Stay tuned for her return......

Thanks Rich.  Trying to get a feel for the blur feature - it does have some potential

Crosswind,

Excellent screenies mate.  By the way ... I do know that you can get a free landing checklist form Diamond. Unfortunately, I believe you have to buy the aircraft first.  That may be where you went wrong LOL

Not a bad wheels up landing though, looking at the lack of damage.  Speaking of which, I think I can just see a missing bolt or rivet in the tailplane assembly, which may have caused this incident.

Thanks for some great pics.

New engines & speed tape yes. the rest will buff right out

I managed a wheels up landing at Courchevel in a 337 Skymaster (Carenado). Even though it was only in the sim, it still came as a shock!

Beautiful shots....who needs gear?  Sure improves the stopping distance when you're sweating it out on a short runway as you're nearing the red lights at the end. 🙂

I hate that feeling when you've flown an airframe long enough and get very used to the site picture when you should be gently touching down on the very expensive rubber you paid for....and you watch the view sink just a tad lower...and just before you realize the impossible....scraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaape. 😞

Not that its' ever happened to me. 🙄🤥

So since the Aviation authorities do not lurk on the forums, I will admit that I was a bit laxed and did not use a checklist which is very likely the cause of my minor FUBAR.  That being said though, what i certainly do not recall seeing or hearing is a warning of the gear not being extended, which I truly doubt Diamond failed to implement such a system.

Thankfully I was able to maintain directional control and came to a stop fairly quickly.  The aircraft however slowly turned to the right moments after coming to rest.

Yes, it happened just about how you described it.  By the time I decided to firewall the engines it would have resulted in having a one-on-one date with the hillside ahead of me.  Anyway after my meeting with the French authorities I caught a flight to Salt Lake City as I saw a bright yellow, goldish DA62 being offered, so I figured I'd go for a test flight.

crosswind,

Recant all mate and do that right now,  I firmly believe this is all down to that missing rivet in the tailplane,. The wreckage, errrr, aircraft, is clearly unairworthy due to that missing rivet and it has nothing to do (in reality) to the checklist or slight inattention at a crucial time at all LOL

Getting back to the gear up warning, I will note that in the TBM, I do get that warning at about 1500feet, but, it is an aural warning, and, it is barely audible for me, I wear hearing aids but I do not see this as significant. The same applies to my current favourite Robert Youngs G36 Bonanza.   It does not particularly concern me as I have had a good and full life, I dont own (ie pay for)  the aircraft and, most importantly, I am an extremely good pilot with an impeccable landing crash ration of approximately 2 to 1 LOL.

Seriously, I think this warning volume may be imbedded somewhere in the settings.

In contrast, flying the Phenom 300 in P3D, I get those same warnings and they are very annoying because they are loud and combine with "Terrain Terrain" and start about 2000 feet on the landing approach. In reality, about 10NM out, I am bombarded with "Check Gear and Terrain Terrain" and it starts as soon as I apply the first level of flaps. It is very annoying and totally (in my opinion) unrealistic.

In retrospect, I think I prefer the barely audible approach, mainly because I think it may be fixable.

Regards mate and thanks again for those wonderful screenies.

Or as we say in our operation "when the Feds come around  - LIE, LIE & DENY"😁

Agreed, that the TBM will holla at you from about 1500' AGL.  The Baron which I flew back in the day had a mod for a red flashing light on the glareshield  when the speed was below 120 at 1000' AGL , now in the modern day Baron I think its an aural warning.

I think the ideal approach would have been an FLASHING AMBER or RED warning in the PFD.

Crosswind,

I have to agree, although I would not mind a "once only" Check Gear in combination with the flashing lights.
