Dumb question, but what’s the advantage of running SteamVR with the G2 if I have OpenXR? Or is it one or the other?

No any advantage for me. Asobo works with MS to have better results without SteamVR in own WMR settings.

I still don't quite get it.

I know after launching MSFS, if you have a VR headset plugged in and detected. That the VR options become available to you. Press LCTL-TAB to enter WMR VR. Fine, I understand that.

If Asobo & MS favour the WMR/OpenXR Tool method. Why are most fourms (this one, and MSFS) advising users to download (in Steam) Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR [beta]?

From what I am reading, in all the knowledgeable and important VR threads, the thread creator appears to be running Steam and The WMR for Steam?

Hope you all have a peaceful and pleasant Christmas Day.

Agreed!

Spotty volumetric clouds on ultra are doable at high altitude when the sim doesn't need to render ground detail as much.

Start throwing overcast and layers on while on ground and it will surely have your FPS for brunch.🤣

There's no doubt different scenarios do hamper performance, I was going on what I saw and what I saw at that time wasn't as big an FPS loss as I had thought it might be. Again everyones experience will differ depending on your hardware & HMD of use 🙂

If there's one thing I've learnt from VR Gaming it's that System Specs lay an even bigger role in tweaking settings than normal Flatscreen, as ever take my advice & others but ultimately you need to find your own balance.

If you get this going please report here how you managed. I have the G2 and have done the registry edit, started MSFS, selected VR shut down, and every combination and order I can think of including re booting between changes. Still MSFS does not show in steam dropdown list.

Was hoping to see if I got better results running MSFS under steam than the default Mixed reality portal.

Thanks

Leave msfs running and than look in steamvr. Maybe if you are in fullscreen you must hit alt + enter to get into windowed mode to be able to use and look into steam vr

Morning lads,

Me neither.

I mean, I've got it working with Oculus Rift on a mediocre system (i5 6600, GTX1060) so I suppose I should be grateful for that - but I don't really understand why I'm doing what I'm doing or whether I could make it any better by doing something else. I've just basically followed a load of random tips, some of which may be having an effect and some not. I suppose the basic problem is that I don't have a deep enough understanding of VR or the terminology that people use. What I'm really waiting for is the "Idiots Guide" to setting it up - preferably one set of instructions for each different headset.

I start the sim by using my MSFS desktop shortcut (not Steam). I put the headset on when the flight has loaded and press Ctrl + Tab to enter VR mode. Then I use the space bar to centre the view. The plane (an ultralight) manoeuvres pretty smoothly but the scenery looks a little more blurry than I remember it being in Aerofly even though I have render scale set at 100. The other annoying thing is that, although I can turn my head from side to side to view the scenery without any problems, when I lean forwards or backwards the cockpit just retreats away or follows me back. Also nearby components of the plane judder even though the scenery doesn't.

This is a random list of info/issues/advice I've picked up from this forum and other sources:

1. Headset not recognised  Only had this briefly at the beginning. Solved in my case by unplugging and re-plugging headset USB.

2. Black frame/artefact  Never had that problem.

3. Edit the registry using regedit  I looked into this and found that my registry entry was already correct.

4. Starting in Steam VR  Doesn't seem to make any difference. (I think, following some advice or other, I also had WMR and Oculus open.)

5. Oculus Beta updates  I suspect this was the one piece of advice that made all the difference initially. The sim went from unplayable to playable.

6. Oculus Tray Tool  This does actually have some (largely negative!) effect on my flying experience. If I change the Default Super Sampling to anything above 1.0 things get a bit more juddery but I don't really notice any improvement in image quality. I'm not sure I can see any difference between Default ASW Mode set to Off or 30fps.

7. OpenXR and Windows Mixed Reality  This is where I start to flounder. I have OpenXR (and the Developer Tool) downloaded, but have no idea what it's doing or whether it's doing anything at all. I saw in a video somewhere that I ought to have "use latest preview OpenXR runtime" set to "on" and motion reprojection "on". However the Developer Tool tells me that WMR OpenXR runtime is not set as the active runtime, so is it really doing anything in that case? I have the option to set it as the active runtime, but if I do that my headset is no longer recognised because it changes the registry entry (see above).

All in all, I'm pleased (and surprised) that MSFS VR works at all on my system. I actually get less stuttering in VR than I had in 2D. In 2D the sim would become unplayable after about an hour of use, regardless of the settings or scenery. However now I'm beginning to take all that for granted and have started  to focus a bit more on the shortcomings in my experience!

Merry Christmas Ian. Thanks for your musings.

I have a G2, and do you know - According to Zen Desk, don't need OpenXR or the Developers Toolkit!

Have a look here: https://flightsimulator.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360018555179-How-to-install-OpenXR-

WMR (WINDOWS MIXED REALITY) HEADSETS

No action needs to be taken if you are using a Windows Mixed Reality headset.

I think I need to give it all up and buy a kitten or something.

+1 to getting a cat! 😂

I saw that too, but downloaded it anyway. VR in MSFS with the G2 certainly works without OpenXR and/or SteamXR. I guess I’m wondering it those tools actually make a difference, and if so, how? (Also, given the registry, I would imagine one one can be used at a time).

Brilliant idea - kittens generally work straight out of the box.

Merry Christmas!
