December 30, 20205 yr Hi has anyone got any useful tips that could improve the user interface with the knobs on the G1000 in flight sim2020? I have not bind any particular key to these various knobs just the cursor but I am having real problems getting my cursor to click on the appropriate + and - . I don't have a mouse just the laptop keyboard along with Hotas Thrustmaster joystick and dual throttles.

December 30, 20205 yr Author Yeah its pretty frustrating why 2020 sim developers neglected the avionics I guess they aren't marketing to pilots wanting to brush up on IR, how is the real sim gear g1000?

December 30, 20205 yr I use the realsimgear g1000. I am not able to properly use the G1000 with a mouse. Sorry, this is not what you want to hear, but I have tried, hard, and finally decided for a hardware solution.

December 30, 20205 yr It is basically a G1000, with all the knobs and buttons. There is a beta now (since it was released before msfs2020) which works well for msfs2020 (the hdg button, when pressed, goes to heading North, not to present heading as it should). The rest work as they should. It is a good solution if you fly g1000 equipped aircrafts. I find mouse unusable. A bit expensive, and, for the record, at least in my system, it takes around 5 fps when used as a second monitor. If you only use it as a "button joystick", which you can do, it works fine.
December 30, 20205 yr If you don't like the mouse clicks and you want a reasonably inexpensive hardware fix, the Logitech G Saitek Pro Flight Multi Panel is a pretty decent plug and play solution for MSFS. It'll cost you about 80 quid to get one, but you just download the MSFS drivers from the Saitek website, plug the thing in to a USB port and Bob's yer uncle: full hardware autopilot controls for MSFS, plus a hardware flaps lever and perhaps best of all, a hardware elevator trim wheel, which might even justify the price on its own given how cack trimming usually is in a flight sim. Here it is flying the default MSFS Beech King Air 350 tacking the FMS GPS NAV source, holding at 26,000 feet, having climbed up there using the VSI controls: One of the best things about this kind of hardware set up, is that you can be handling ATC much more easily if you can quickly get everything set up after departure with hardware controls rather than having to faff about with a mouse to get the thing on course whilst ATC is also bothering you. Sure two pilots can easily do this, but when you are on your own in a flight sim and don't want to pause things, hardware rotary controls and buttons for this kind of stuff in combination with a headset where you can talk to ATC (I use Multi Crew Experience for that) is a godsend, as well as being more immersive and more realistic. The new Class Echo kit for this looks like a possibly good - if a little on the pricey side for a DIY option - solution for this problem too, so check that out as well. What I will say about things like this which seem pricey, is that you realise it's worth the cash when you actually get them and see how much easier and more fun things are. I don't have a mouse just the laptop keyboard along with Hotas Thrustmaster joystick and dual throttles. They are a pain in the rump. The FMS and Range knobs along with the selection buttons along the bottom have no assignments available so the only way to get them is with proprietary software like in the RSG G1000, etc. which, while nice, is very expensive. You could try setting up a custom camera for the G1000. This may make it easier for you. Pan and zoom the camera to where you want and then use Ctrl-Alt-1 through Ctrl-Alt-9 to setup and store custom cameras. To bring them back up use Alt-1 through Alt-9. I use TrackIR and it's pause feature myself. I lean in zooming into the area of the G1000 I want to use then press the TrackIR pause button I have setup on my mouse. Whether you use TrackIR or don't have it and set up custome cameras, it makes life a whole lot easier once the thing is zoomed in and not bouncing around. When you mouse over the area of those buttons you want, use the mouse wheel to rotate the button instead of clicking. This works much better and you don't have to change sides of the knob to click the other way (just rotate the mouse wheel in the opposite direction). What I would really like to see is MS/Asobo add some keybindings for these keys. That would make life a whole lot easier and you could then set up as many dual rotarty encoders as you need to take care of ihings without spending a fortune. A little side note: MS/Asobo claim they read Avsim. If so, get us some keybindings for these things darnit. James

But if fits perfectly on top of the honeycomb alpha or bravo. Screws in.

Are you sure that you didn't set them up previously and forget? They were not set up for me default. I had to set them up myself when MSFS first came out. Maybe something has changed in one of the updates (haven't been using custom cameras for a long time, been using TrackIR instead). James

I also use track IR, and the shortcuts still work. I’ve never changed them before so maybe they were in a later update?

I think I will go for the class echo just because it looks to have more options than Saitek plus I have a good trim incorporated into my Thrustmaster Hotas joystick. I'd like to be able to talk to ATC too is the Multi Crew Experience east to set up? I presume it works over UK airspace?
