Using ASP4 with P3D V5

Featured Replies

Hello,
I have contacted Hifi about this but has not received reply yet, and have searched everywhere for the answers.

Is it possible to use ASP4 with P3D V5? I installed and using it, seems ok but I'm not quite a tester level guy of these addons. The only thing I have to do is manually pointing the location of P3D V5, everything else seem working normally.

And how is ASP4 different from ASP3D? Is it worth upgrading to the newest version?

Thank you and safe flights,

Hoang Le.

Since you're using v5 it's the same answer, was it worth upgrading from v4. If you are committed to using v5 in my opinion then yes.

There are five things I won't fly without.

  • Active Sky
  • Chase Plane
  • Zinertek HD airports
  • Orbx base and Open LC
  • GTN 750

Afaik as long as you don't turn on EA in v5 the older asp4 will do its job. If you want the enhanced atmospherics supported you will need asp3d.

Thank you. AFAIK even the new asp3d and asca do not work with EA turn on.

From reading the new functions of ASP3D, I dont think I can notice the changes. I might stick with the ASP4 and see how it handles V5.

Hi Hoang,

There was a previous thread about the new features being introduced with ASP3D as it relates to P3Dv4 and v5 and continuing improvements over the previous version ASP4.

Different people are motivated by the importance of different features, so what may be an incentive to upgrade for some people may not apply to another.

See here for more info.  One of the developers (Damian) responded directly in this thread.

Asca is a 2d texture exchange set and therefore is not supposed to work in v5 ea for clouds. And asp3d is working nice with ea in the limitations ea is still having. I switch if on and off following my mood 😉

The most prominent will be the lack of cirrus clouds and some lighting issues near/on ground with low sun. Plus the roundabout 1gb extra on vram that can be the difference between simming and crashing (depending on the amount of vram of your gpu). There are some more limitations regarding asp3d listed on hifis product page but they are mostly listing stuff that is in my eyes not needed or limited with EA anyway like in-cloud motion effect and in-cloud visibility reduction that imho do not add much in a volumetric cloud anyway. Plus if you are a tubeliner guy you will have the chance to notice some grid style patterns from high above looking down with big cloud covers. If this is more disturbing than the donut pattern of old style p3d atmospherics is a matter of taste and as always very subjective. I'm happily using asp3d in p3dv5 with and without ea and asxpl in xp11 plus msfs with its way better cloud presentation (yes thats subjective again 😄 ). All have their pros and cons as usual.

Many thanks Torsen.
