Orbx regarding Landmarks London City Pack compatibility

Recommended Posts

https://orbxsystems.com/forum/topic/205264-compatibility-of-orbx-landmarks-london-city-pack-with-microsoft-world-update-united-kingdom/

Quote

In its current form, Landmarks London conflicts with the Microsoft update due to overlapping landmark buildings and our terraforming files. Thus, you will see duplicate buildings, as well as missing areas of photogrammetry buildings, among other inconsistencies.

We are currently working on a separate pack which will be fully compatible with the Microsoft World Update: UK. This will be free for customers who have previously purchased the London City pack.

Once this pack is released (in a week or less in Orbx Central and possibly a little longer on the MS Marketplace as we are dependent on their approval queue), there will be two products: one for the non-UK update and one for the UK update. You will then be able to activate one or the other, depending on whether you have the UK update running or not.

In addition, we are planning a comprehensive content update in a few weeks’ time to add some exciting new landmarks to both packs.

If purchasing the pack as a new customer, you will be able to choose either product, though both will be included in the same price, ie. you can get both, pay once, and decide which one you want to run.

Later, Orbx CEO commented on the lack of a beta test for this World Update, which will hopefully be a thing soon.

Quote

We did not have access to the UK update until it was released publicly. Agree it would have been good to start working on this earlier (we did ask to have early beta access). Personal thanks for supporting us as we update the pack - working as fast as we can :-)

The question now is : is there any good reason to keep using Landmarks London City after the update ?
Or to buy them ?

Some might want to switch off photogrammetry for performance reasons, but still also want to have some landmarks that make London look more like London.

That's remarkable, even more, as this situation could be foreseen and will repeat over and over. And if ORBX didn't get a pre-release version, what about smaller developers like Prealsoft or SamScene & friends?

Kind regards, Michael

I think Asobo said its in the works to provide early access to 3PD's and later in the year they plan to setup external beta testers.

MSFS is moving forward at breakneck speed and it will take time to get to where we all want it to be.

Really quite odd given that the original release version of MSFS omitted key London buildings so Orbx could fill them in, e.g. St Paul's Cathedral.

Makes me want to sit on my hands until the dust settles... there’s a LOT in flux currently. I will write “Patience is a virtue.” backwards on my forehead.

I am pretty sure they will add photogrammetry for major cities like Amsterdam, Paris, Brussels, Bordeaux (Obviously) .. etc. So now the question in my head, will be the Paris landmark that will most likely conflict, let's see if ORBX will get a beta update few weeks before 🤔

I'll definitely be loading them up again. Dunno about buying them now but London for me at least looks hideous so I will at least want a few crisp things to look at. Maybe it's a streaming speed issue that'll be solved.

Pretty sure it's a streaming speed issue. Using the drone, I plopped myself in the middle of downtown London, down low, using a pretty fast move. Once I got there, the photogrammetry buildings looked (as you said) hideous. However, if I didn't move at all and just waited, eventually they started to look better and better. You could see the buildings morphing into higher and higher resolution. I'm at 30 Gbps down. I do occasionally get a notice that my bandwidth is not sufficient for photogrammetry, but I ignore that. I guess they meant it when they said 50 Gbps for Ultra. I'm also guessing that when I did this, yesterday afternoon (EST) that the cloud servers were being hammered.

I just flew the drone around London City to see how it looked after the update. Along with everyone else, I noticed some buildings looked very good and others not so good, but overall I was happy with it. I was hesitant to buy ORBX London City and also heard about the incompatibility. But with the latest announcement from ORBX referring to them working on an update that will work WITH the UK update to enhance the photogrammetry London I decided to buy it now while it's on sale, and wait for the update. Kind of sounds like it will be the best of both worlds to have ORBX London City in conjunction with the UK Update's London photogrammetry.

Is it done yet? When will it be released? Will it be freeware or payware? How much will it cost? Any updates on the progress? Will it work for Xbox? Can I be a beta tester? How's the performance in VR?
