Now here's the thing LOL

I have just found a huge amount of uninstalled content in my content manager. This was discovered in the process of deleting all the world updates and airports that I do not require. I have deleted what I want to delete but how do I download and install the content which is stated to be uninstalled.

Normally, I would assume that you click on the wanted items and get a box which says "download and install"

I am clicking on the uninstalled stuff that I want installed but I am not getting that message above. How do I go about this or have I done summat incorrectly?

Hang on a sec ... I think I have it worked out.

All the stuff I deleted now reads " not installed   download available"   the stuff I kept is reading " installed and version number    up to date' and  all the rest is  reading "not installed    community"

Does this indicate that it is actually installed but it is in the Community Folder?

From what I recall each World Update shows up in content manager and you can just uninstall the entire update.

Correct. BTW, I always forget to check for default scenery updates. have no idea if it will help with loading time. Disk space for sure! Best to search by name, Cause the files are all over the place. Although I think you can sort by different options?

Yep.

Until recently that stuff never showed up at all. Now it shows up but as "uninstalled" .

What it is probably meant to say is "other software not installed by content manager" .

I do not fly in Japan, England, France or the USA and my load times are about 12-15 minutes. The only sceneries I have are Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia which is about 90, 65 and 20  3PD sceneries respectively.

I figure that if I could uninstall the World updates until about 2075 (I think that is the year OZ will get some love LOL) it may make my loading times a little less onerous.

12 to 15 minutes seems long, is that just to the menu or all the way to "ready to fly"

I did some tests yesterday and the worst case was 3 minutes 33 seconds to menu. The time drops to 2 minutes 48 seconds after a quit and reload. Turning vsync off speeds up the loading screens although I usually have it on when flying which seems to lessen stutters.. The best time I achieved was 1 minute 20 seconds with internet disabled.

As Glenn Fitzpatrick explained, you can uninstall regions from the content manager. I have yet to try this though but I think I'll give it a go later since I already did some timings with everything installed.

I mostly fly in South Africa so the world updates are of little interest to me.

Load times of 12 -15 minutes are way longer than necessary or normal!  Use Addon Manager, as a great many simmers do, and things will go much faster and MSFS much easier to use. It is important to understand that AM places links to your selected addon files, not the files themselves, in Community -- which makes a huge difference since the links require very little drive space.

For science I selected everything except the Aerosoft CRJ and the base package which can't be selected anyway and deleted. It made about 20 seconds difference to startup time, so not really worth the bother. The FBW A320 downloaded with FBWs installer I left alone as well.

I then discovered that almost all of the aircraft were gone, so downloaded the ones I actually like to fly only leaving out the extra liveries. For airports I only selected the 3 or so airports that are in Africa.

I left out the lessons, bush flying and challenges since I've never really bothered with them anyway.

Mate, yesterday I uninstalled everything in my Official folder that was not Australia. This includes all the airports, sceneries, bush flights, and landing challenges etc (via the Content Manager)

This morning I fired up MSFS and it took 12 minutes to get to the welcome screen, ie ready to select aircraft etc. So I have saved a couple or three minutes.  Still far to long to load but I do have a lot of items in the community folder.

It takes about an hour + to move the Community folder and put in an empty one in its place.  Same applies to putting the full one back. I may well have to do this and retry to load to see if it makes a difference.  I do know that I have intermittent performance problems where frames go to 10-15FPS and it becomes unflyable. I suspect (as I tell everyone else with performance problems) that the solution lies in sorting out the Community folder. This, for me, however is a vast project, not to be contemplated lightly, but will have to be done.

A further issue is that right from the beginning my load times have been significant.  I remember noting when I first downloaded MSFS that load times were significantly longer than P3Dv4.5 or XPlane11.  My load times have been in excess of 12 minutes for quite some time now but it has never been an issue until the last update which introduced the intermittent and abysmal performance problem.

My problem is that, as stated previously, it is so intermittent.  I may make two flights which are completely normal and then follow that up with 6 or 7 which I have to exit out of. That sort of thing is very, very difficult to sort out and very time consuming.  I am becoming more and more an XPlane user who misses MSFS very much.  Strange predicament.

Vsync is and never has been an issue as it is turned off.

I would also like to point out that my comments are, just that, comments, I am not (at this stage at least), requesting help, and again load times are not the issue for me. It is the performance degradation which is more concerning , although I admit that they may well be related.

This is absolutely crazy. There is no need to ever move your Community folder, or do most of the stuff you describe, i.e. uninstalling everything but Australia, etc.(that is absolutely unnecessary). There may be a problem with your MSFS installation. In any case, as I said earlier, load times of 12-15 minutes are definitely NOT normal. Others with more expertise than I have can probably offer more detailed advice, but I will repeat the suggestion that you try Addon Manager. Good luck!

cobalt,

I think I have mentioned that since the last update, I have done a few un-installs and re-installs.  I think I have also mentioned that I have had long, long load times since I first downloaded and installed MSFS.  This is not something new for me, nor is it really an issue.  The attempt to delete anything un-Australian was an exercise in slimming down my MSFS. Also for me, a complete uninstall/reinstall only takes a couple of hours (much like a normal load time LOL)

My issue is intermittent performance issues, and these, I believe, emanate from my Community Folder. The contents of this folder seem to be the root cause of many problems in this sim, and there is a dearth of examples noted in this forum.

Also, MS/Asobo have quite often stated that one should either rename or temporarily remove the Community folder before updating MSFS2020 so I believe, along with many others, I think, that there is occasionally, a need to rename, remove or move the Community Folder.

I should also mention that I have a back up copy of my Official folder with everything in it so I believe it is still accessible, should I change my mind and decide to fly where everybody else is etc. It is all still available with a re-install anyway.

Finally, I do not think all of this is "absolutely crazy" and I do not mean this in a denigrating way. With MSFS2020 file sizes growing in leaps and bounds, it just makes sense to me, to get rid of the excesses that I do not use and that in itself will prolong the capacity of the drive which is hosting the programme. I see it in much the same way as having three spare tires in the boot/trunk of a car used exclusively in the city. If you are not using them why have them.

I am aware of the Addon Manager and have it downloaded but not yet installed.  I may go this route if load times actually become a "problem" for me.

Thanks for your input.

Tony

Maybe you already answered this, but have you tried deleting the Community folder and re-starting MSFS (it will create a new, empty Community folder devoid of any add-ons).  If you do this, does it still take 12-15 minutes to load MSFS? It should not take more than 1-2 minutes, even with all the default MSFS files installed. In other words, you should not have to delete any scenery or other files that come with MSFS to have a reasonable load time. If you do, something is wrong. This is what I meant when I said "crazy".
