PMDG 737 Tablet updates are available
JSmith2112 replied to YukonPete's topic in Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020)
Using Google maps and scrolling around or zooming in the tablet crashes the sim for me. On the PMDG forums other users are reporting the same issue. -
MSFS Presentation from FlightSimExpo 2023
JSmith2112 replied to Krakin's topic in Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020)
I've gone from sceptical about the new sim to optimistic with the mention of a "thin client" that downloads assets as required. "Massive performance improvements": Yeah, this sounds like something worth spending some $$ on if they are making big changes to the engine. -
I usually check the Nvidia reddit before installing a driver to see if there are any issues. Unfortunately they are still in protest mode it seems.

It depends on the game. For example Forza Horizon 4 vs Forza Horizon 5 - not really that much of a difference. FS 2024 seems like a similar case. Another example: Fallout 3 vs Fallout 4 - lots of changes and graphical improvements. Worthy of being marketed and priced as a new game in my opinion (although some would disagree).

I'm trying to speed up my launch of MSFS...
JSmith2112 replied to sidfadc's topic in Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020)
I wonder if it would help loading times if MS/Asobo get around to implementing DirectStorage. What is DirectStorage and is your PC next-gen ready? (pocket-lint.com) -
MSFS Favorite Sound Device POLL

AV Receiver with 5.1.2 Dolby surround. I'll use my Samsung earbuds at night to not disturb the household and neighbours but they sound weak and artificial in comparison. -
Creating a BAT File to Autostart
JSmith2112 replied to cianpars's topic in Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020)
Try replacing this line from your batch file: start "" "C:\Users\Dad\AppData\Local\Programs\fbw-installer\FlyByWire Installer.exe" with: cmd.exe /C "%localappdata%\programs\fbw-installer\FlyByWire Installer.exe" My FSLTL is stuck in a lengthy update at the moment so unable to test properly but the command does launch the FBW installer. -
Creating a BAT File to Autostart
JSmith2112 replied to cianpars's topic in Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020)
An alternative start command for the sim itself which also skips the intro videos and works regardless of which drive or path the sim is installed:\ cmd.exe /C start shell:AppsFolder\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe!App -FastLaunch If you want to launch with the FPS information displayed without activating developer mode: cmd.exe /C start shell:AppsFolder\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe!App -FastLaunch -showFramerate Or mini FPS display: cmd.exe /C start shell:AppsFolder\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe!App -FastLaunch -showFramerateMini -
April 29 PMDG update: 737, XBox, EFB, 777
JSmith2112 replied to jrw4's topic in Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020)
I'm not at my PC at the moment but as I recall the V speeds for takeoff are on page 3 of the Init section in the FMC. You just click on the suggested values and they are displayed on the PFD. Takeoff trim is there as well which you dial in manually. Vref is in a different section of the FMC. -

Internet speed upgrade - worthwhile for MSFS2020?
JSmith2112 replied to brucewtb's topic in Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020)
It's easy to check how much FS2020 uses by bringing up the task manager with CTRL-SHIFT-ESC. Click the performance tab and select your network connection. It probably says Ethernet or similar. I have a 50 Mbit/s connection and the sim is currently downloading the latest update at full blast because I'm late to the party. On patch update days I'm lucky to get 10 Mbit/s though. Terrain streaming seems to be at under 10 Mbit/s for me usually and everything looks fine. I'd say a higher connection speed might only benefit you when updates come out. Terrain streaming doesn't seem to be very bandwidth intensive. -
Whenever you revisit the same airport the scenery renders immediately even in the world map. Try it for yourself to see if it makes a difference for you. It certainly does for me where the closest Microsoft servers are a 10 hour flight away in real world distance.
-
Just guessing here but I wouldnt be surprised that if you have rolling cache disabled some of the data that is streamed from the internet is still written to a temporary file or files before being processed by the sim and then re-written over and over. Rolling cache will be useful if you often fly to or from particular airports. You should see the flight loading in noticeably quicker. Rolling cache is definetly not only for photogrammetary. I mostly fly in areas that don't have photogrammetery and I find the cache beneficial. To guage the size of cache needed simply open the data section in the options menu and note the amount of data used after you have flown for a while with the cache on. 16 Gigs seems about right for my usage.

Which Airbus if coming from PMDG 738/777
JSmith2112 replied to Noel's topic in Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020)
It depends on your system specs and sim settings. If you lock your FPS at 30 you may not notice much difference between them but if you have your FPS unlimited or at greater than 30 FPS you will proably get somewhat higher FPS with the FBW. On the down side you may experience stutters from time to time with the FBW. The Fenix has some options you can tweak to run it's external process rendering on your CPU or GPU that can help FPS. On my system it runs best with the CPU option. -
Good to know since I cancelled my Navigraph subscription a while ago and like using Littlenavmap.
-
The ILS frequencies are available to look up in the FMC under approach if I recall correctly if that's what you were asking?
-
The new radios have to be enabled on the last page of the FMC equipment options. Seems like GLS is still inop though.

What makes Fenix the better A32 over FBW...or is it?

A bit off topic, but possibly because of this fatal accident that occurred with an A300: FAA to Airbus: Install rudder warning after fatal crash (usatoday.com) -

Confused as hell at low frame rates
JSmith2112 replied to BlodhemnUK's topic in Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020)
One exception though is when your OS drive is only 500 Gig (like mine) 😎 - then you have to split your stuff across drives. I have 2 x 2 TB drives for my games and photography stuff. -
Confused as hell at low frame rates
JSmith2112 replied to BlodhemnUK's topic in Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020)
I think much of the delay time in FS2020 loading is due to waiting on the servers. Drive performance shouldn't really be an issue unless you're using an actual hard drive. Drive performance also has zero impact on FPS unless you are severely RAM limited and your system has to start using the page file. -
Probably not. The TBM had operable doors in the 1st few iterations of the FS2020 alpha though. No idea why the doors were disabled.
