June 3, 20215 yr Been opting out of GPS and doing a lot of cross country lately. I use the Flight1 GTN750 but not in map/gps mode. To date have logged approx 2K hours in one version or another of MSFS since mid 1980's. Mostly in FW single and twin GA props. Going back to VOR/DME/NDB is more labor intensive and for now more rewarding. Watch many 'YouTube" videos Rod Machado, 310Pilot, Baron Pilot, Martin Pauly, Steveokinevo, FlightChops, KermitWeeks and many others. They have helped me better manage the aircraft and get more immersed in the sim experience. So much to glean and improve on instead of just watching a pretty map and follow the magenta line. I'll still occasionally return to the modern way. BTW the NDB's are still out there ...just gotta use Skyvector and zoom in. Kudos to Bert and all you guys that have helped with panel and aircraft mods. Still on FSX/Steam as my PC's are always 2-3 years behind the latest software goodies. 2 Monitors, 240G SSD.FSX:Steam with UTX USA Scenery, ORBX Base, Buildings, Airports, NorCAL, Steam addon- Airports, Trees, Milviz310R, Alabeo310R, Flight1 GTN750/650, Carenado- TBM850, Baron, Arrow, V35, F33, C441, 421C, Phenom 100, Premier 1A, RA Duke B60 V2, RA Duke Turbine V2, Active Sky Next always running real WX. June 4, 20215 yr Its the way I like to do it too. My challenge is always to complete my flight by beacon and without referring to any mapping system that shows where my aircraft is and not get nagged at by ATC for being off course. October 25, 20214 yr Yup. Flying via VOR/NDB is much more challenging and satisfying. Add to that using an older flight engineer biased plane like Concorde X or A2A Captain of the Ship B377 and the fun can't be beat. Hint: I slow the sim down as needed cause the work load gets to crazy at times.
October 26, 20214 yr I'm doing the same. Flying, landing, manoeuvres - that's the easy part. Navigating - now that can be hard and potentially lethal if you get it wrong... - Paul Elliott http://www.avsim.com/topic/450607-amy-johnson-london-to-australia-attempt/
