New sim, same old annoyances

Featured Replies

Not a hate thread I love MSFS.. I want it to succeed but some old teething issues from even FSX and further back still linger..

Example.. Fully updated with the latest World Update.

Went to check out St Barth in the Top Rudder Solo 103. Couldn't help but notice. In external view. The plane had no pilot at all.

From my long time sim experience my first go to was to delete Content.xml and try again.. Low and behold my pilot returned to the cockpit.  These may seem like little things to the experienced who know the automatic trouble shooting but to the casual, or new simmers.. This sort of problem that stems back further than I'd like to admit needs to be put to rest. It's an old lookup style system that gets easily corrupt with updates and addons. In 2021, it just shouldn't exist anymore having to delete files to let them regenerate to correct issues. Many of you know. This isn't the first or likely last time "delete context.xml" was a suggestion to fix an issue in MSFS 2020 and it actually did.

I never really got the function of that content.xml and I've read several theories what it does. One issue seems to be it collects obsolete data, at least under certain conditions.

Obviously, it can be delected every time before the simulator is run, so I ask myself why this isn't done from the sim itself?

If memory serves me right, an early version of the Addon Linker had a function to do that, which seems to have been removed later, though.

Kind regards, Michael

I long for the day that you don't have to put a disclaimer at the beginning of a post like this.  Just to stave off the cadre.

As for content.xml, I would make them aware of the issue and the conditions when it can happen (if it's reproduceable, that's even better).  As you say Michael maybe it could be done when the sim starts.  Maybe something has changed with content.xml in the latest versions and that is why Addon Linker does not reset the file anymore.

This is why I never applied as a beta tester. I don't have the time or patience to document.

Update from the OP.. Well that apparently didn't solve it either..  I just loaded up a flight and once again..

No pilot... I'm getting annoyed now. This worked perfectly before the world update

Is it just this airplane?

Edit, just checked it, Solo 103 at TFFJ... pilot shows up.

Go to Content Manager and make sure you have the latest version of the 103.  I went into mine and there was an update available.

Bert's photo shows another age old problem.  The smudged white runway lines around the aircraft.  They are actually sharper and in focus from a few metres away right into the distance.

If you move off and go back, they become sharp!  It is a strange one, like there is an ineffective LOD ring around the immediate area of the aircraft.

I have not found a solution for this yet with many hours of trying, so I think it is just an inherent bug in the sim.  Hopefully, 50/50 DX12 may solve it, otherwise Asobo will need to look at it.  I don't know how they don't see this when testing.

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Yup.. I get this all the time too. I love the sim I just find it odd some of the cobwebs from over a decade past still haunt the base game while they are actively moving on to much larger endeavors.  It seems small, but a bunch of little things all add up.

You can actually see here as I advanced the plane beyond the "10"  forward the runway marks get crisp as now they are becoming "in the distance", and the initial ineffective LOD remains in the middle because it's not "distant enough" yet and then becomes sharp again as the original markings that were in the distance at start up are on the right
