An alternative talking point to the 11.55R2 thread

Featured Replies

As an equally futile topic that may distract attention from the battle between the usual suspects relating to 11.55R2 – currently top discussion on this forum and where sad people explore unknown paths and become hopelessly lost in their own egos – could we discuss widescreen monitors and video cards in a fruitless way?

I very much want a Samsung 49-inch Odyssey G9 curved monitor, which runs at 240Hz. It is described by reviewers (in layman’s terms) as the proverbial dog’s wedding tackle, and looks like a bargain at just under $3000 in my local New Zealand dollars. Do the maths on your own currency.

But there is a catch. I have an Asus ROG 1080ti video card and although it has 11Gb of usable RAM, it does not possess the technology to support the Odyssey’s refresh rate and limits it to 120Hz. So, to use the $3 grand G9, I need a much better card – say a 3080ti, which is on the market for quite a lot more than the monitor.

This is thanks to Covid-19-caused chip shortages, crypto currency miners about to lose their shirts, and a rapacious bunch of retailers. So my topic for discussion is: how do we terminate these actors, who have turned the old market model (of increased performance matched by lower prices) on its head?

The usual suspects in the other thread are politely requested not to join this more generally interesting one.

High refresh monitors are of little use for Xplane since it is unlikely you would be able to match the frame rates to the refresh rate.  However, there are certainly other reasons to have that monitor that you specified.

As far as the question you raised about how to “terminate” those responsible for the high cost of GPUs, I’m not sure what you are asking.  Market forces have predictable effects of supply and demand. Unless you can figure out how to get millions of people to suddenly do something different in regards to purchasing video cards, and do it perhaps against their own interests, we all have to wait for the time it takes for the market to re-adjust. That takes time.

NVIDIA LHR cards have lower hash rates that won't appeal to miners in an effort to free up the demand so that "gamers" can access them. Time will tell how effective this move is, but I don't the availability will get much better this year...

It is pretty fruitless so far! 👍🙂

You were politely requested not to post on this thread. Wait! So was I.😂

Ban conversion of crypto on a global basis.

But better get used to those premium prices. Ever more complex and demanding hardware manufacturing processes, ever growing adoption of computrization and limited availability of raw materials plus incredibly inefficient recycling of decommissioned hardware just don't mix well.

Conversion of crypto into standard currency. And banning crypto as a payment method for goods and services is another important aspect.

pretty sure the good and services that form[ed] the backbone of crypto curriencies are already banned.

Doubt its a coincidence that El Salvador just adopted bitcoin for their national currency given their history with the contras and CIA.

Good and services are not banned and if they are it's temporary. I think the Central Banks will be backing up their Digital Currencies with BTC (Bitcoin). BTC (Baby Trading Currency) is a CIA creation. The MSM is trying to create a fear campaign to drive the price down, so their friends can buy it for cheaper. The million dollar investment question: which cryptos are the future?

I very much doubt any digital currency created by the government or central banks would be backed by Bitcoin as they can't just produce or print more Bitcoin when they need it and don't actually have any control over it. The FUD out of China recently with all the banning and forcing of miners out of the country is likely in reaction to getting their own Digital Yuan off the ground.

They didn't... They made it legal tender in the country but didn't make it their national currency. In short, they are obligating everyone to take payments in both USD and Bitcoin, and are also looking in to eco-friendly mining from their volcanoes. One of the drivers behind this decision was for citizens who work abroad to be able to send money back home to their families without huge costs and issues.

Anyway... this is going off-topic, as much as it's a fascinating thing to talk about

They allege Chepe Luna was previously having similar problems to Pablo.

now you can fit all that on a thumbdrive.

There should be a way to bring it on topic but I got nothing.

Perhaps American Made

msparks and the other Usual Suspects just can't resist polluting the debate, can they? Their comments, here and elsewhere, reveal more about a struggle with personal difficulties than casting light on the topic.

The only relevant addition to this discussion was from Randall. After that, it descended into unhelpful nonsense. Yes, Randall, there are other good reasons to buy that monitor. I'm compiling a list of them to submit to my Manager.

On a semi-technical note, my slightly overclocked 1080ti is running alongside an under-volted AMD 5950X on an Asus Crosshair VIII Dark Hero board with an Asus ROG 34-inch 100Hz monitor. I average 85fps and sometimes clip 105, and yes, it’s always the CPU lagging behind the GPU. That points to the XP11 code. Let’s hope XP12 does better.

the debate

There is no debate

11.55 is final, there are no further updates to XP11 planned, and you can probably expect the next software release from Laminar sometime in 2022. Those who insisted there is nothing further needed any time soon got their way.
