HDR screenshots being washed out

For HDR to work correctly in MSFS, HDR has to be set to ON both in Windows display options AND in MSFS graphics settings. In addition to that, it probably has to be activated on your monitor/TV, unless it’s on by default.

wow , thanks capt Piett, worked wonders looks fantastic now , cheers

In SDR everything is over bright and washed out

Only if your settings need tweaking.  These images are SDR and they are far from over bright and washed out.  HDR is even better of course.

Firstly I would say get your monitor calibrated with something like the Xrite i1 Display Pro.  Hardware calibrators are expensive but they ensure your monitor calibration is spot on.

Secondly MSFS is far too bright, especially the shadows.  For Nvidia I would recommend using GEForce Experience to get access to the filters.  I recommend just two filters, the most important being Details/HD Toning to be turned down.

I don't think it hurts to re-vitalise this topic. I converted to an HDR monitor end of last year and it was a bit of a learning exercise. If it's not all set up ok it can look very artificial, to my eyes at least. As of now though I've got everything looking reasonably ok. HDR on in WIn (11), MSFS and NVDM, and on the monitor itself I have various options and at the moment I'm using a setting called (I think) HDR-100 or something similar. I use the X-Box game bar for screen captures, which grabs both .JXR and .PNG files, and then I just right click to convert the .PNG to .JPG (I'm using Directory Opus as my file manager, so don't know if that's a DO thing or standard). Resulting SDR jpeg is reasonably ok - sometimes the background can look a little washed out if the original image was quite bright (sunny skies etc) but if it was a bit darker to begin with (cloudy skies etc) it's usually very acceptable.

I've also played with some of the GeForce filters, and they can work ok, but I haven't tried any of the various shader tools yet. On the actual sim PC and HDR monitor it's all working fine now for me. If I look at the screenies on my other PC or upload them they sometimes lose a bit of quality but I'm ok with that.

Ryzen 9 7900X, Corsair H150 AIO cooler, 64 Gb DDR5, Asus X670E Hero m/b, 3090ti, 13Tb NVMe, 8Tb SSD, 16Tb HD, 55" Philips 4k HDR monitor, EVGA 1600w ps, all in Corsair 7000D airflow case. Sims in use - 2020, 2024, XP-12 and -11, FSX/SE, P3Dv4.5 and v5.4. DCS and AFS2 installed but rarely used

You can use Xbox game bar screenshot feature to take screenshots in hdr. You will get 2 pictures one overbrightend and the other one perfect. Doing this now for almost 1,5 years. Very easy to get a screenshot keyboard shortcut and have nice hdr pictures 🙂

I think the .png one is too dark.

What’s so funny about this it was after a real bad SU update and it was designed for HDR so it needed a HF, hence why at the time my comments.
Most people where having the same trouble and like myself trying HDR. After the patch SDR was perfect again, but that what you get when digging up year old topics and miss quoting out of context of the time.

So funny 😄

Hey man thanks for this very good tip, this is exactly what I've been looking for!

When viewed later in non-HDR mode the .PNG files do look a little darker but with HDR enabled they look spot-on. Good 'nuff.

Only other filter I use is a little added vibrance - only about plus 10 as MSFS by default is a little bland.  HDR Toning I turn down to -30 to improve shadows.
