Have the Moiré Patterns always been there?

Featured Replies

Hi all, after taking rid of Bloom, Blur and Lens Correction, now the visuals are approximately ok, except for a given time of the day when it is definitely cartoonish (reminds me of the single thing I hate most in X-Plane), and two types of artifacts.

First: some awful moiré patterns (this is how they are called in mathematics), that are quite obvious looking ahead  with a uniform background like the sky or the sea. They are in the form of interference fringes: dark - light - dark - light and so on, that move and change form as you look around, but are always parallel to each other.

Second: terrible repeating patterns in water.

I think that with some post processing involving a grain of salt (convolution with an appropriate filter with some random elements) one can get rid of both, but I am no expert in video, so I was wondering if someone around here knows more.

Also, I am sure that this problem was not there before SU5. Maybe some post processing was eliminated?

A.

If you post screenshots  we would have a better idea of the things you are trying to point out.

Yes, a picture really would be worth a thousand words here. The OP passionately blocked me in a previous thread but if some kind soul could either quote this or suggest (don’t ‘tell’ him, he doesn’t like it) rolling back to 466.77 if he’s on Nvidia, this might help.

Moiré, you mean shimmering ? If so, I have not seen any before SU5. After SU5, I had then some quite intense in some place, including after HF1. I have not had to time to fly much since HF2 to check.

No post processing parameters will do anything to ly knowledge.

If you mean moiré on whole tile surface with the french meaning of the word, no I have’t seen any. Maybe a driver issue then.

Not sure exactly what you mean.

There are some moire like interference patterns that result from the post processing sharpening filter in usercfg.opt  (mainly seen in mesh fences at airfields)  try disabling that and see if it helps.

Also turn off any sharpening in your Nvidia/AMD options and see if that helps.

I have had this moire effect from day 1, one of the more annoying aspects of the sim that put me off using it for some months.  The only way I have found to reduce this anomaly is by adjusting the sharpen parameter in my Sony TV's advanced graphics settings.  Changing sharpen in UserCfg.opt doesn't seem to have much effect.  The downside of doing this is that it makes the P3D display a bit soft.

I see this too.  It's especially noticeable in thick, dense, white clouds. My clouds are on High rather than Ultra, so that may cause it.   I have Sharpening off in the UserCFG and in Nvidia Control Panel.
