The pinging noise after shutdown is the engine cooling and contracting. It gets transmitted through the engine bearers to the duralumin skin on the wing surface over the cabin, so you hear it in the cockpit. That kind of thing is usually a bit more common on air-cooled engines with fins on them, than with water cooled engines such as the Rangers found on a G44 Widgeon, but it does still happen.

It is one of the reasons why you normally idle such engines for a while at low revs, after landing, before shutting them down; so that they can cool down a bit more slowly and not end up doing things such as warping the cylinder heads or cracking the fins on them, which is generally known as 'shock cooling'.

In reality, you have do be mindful of that risk of damage in the air too with older engines, such as if you are running the engines at medium-high RPM in cruise, and then you throttle back and go into a steep descent. If doing that, you would occasionally give the engines a bit of revs every once in a while on the long descent, to stop them cooling too rapidly on the and potentially getting shock damage. As a bonus, doing that also stops the plugs fouling too from running at idle for a long period and not burning off the lubricating oil, so even on modern engines it's not a bad idea to do it to stop your plugs getting oiled up.

...we actually also custom coded a full interactive checklist where the copilot can walk you through all the steps. This is a great feature. And you must check this out.

You can see a small demo here on the interactive checklist. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIqeCaJEIoc

What's the trick to activating that cool interactive checklist feature?  I've downloaded and read the manual, and watched the video which shows it in progress, but I don't see anything but the normal checklist in the sim.

Thanks for the detailed explanation Chock. Amazing that they implemented that in the plane. Makes me appreciate it all the more!

This makes me wonder if it is actually intentional...to simulate the sounds of contracting metal as it cools down, e.g. the engine cowlings.

Yes, the engine cooling sounds are intentional.  Another interesting effect is if you open the window the running engine sound changes a bit.

Under Assistance Options > Piloting, turn on Assisted Checklist. Then when the plane is loaded, open the checklist by clicking on the checklist option on the 'overhead' menu that pops up at the top of the screen. When the checklist window opens, at the bottom of it you will see two options - Evaluation and Auto Complete Item.  The difference between these two is if you select Evaluation, when a switch or lever highlights in blue as you go through the checklist, YOU have to move the switch or lever. If you select the Auto Complete option, the 'Co-pilot' moves the switch or lever for you.  If you click on the Reset Page option on the upper left side of the checklist window, everything will be reset so you can go through the checklist 'from scratch'. At least that's how I understand it.

Timely review as it has just hit the Marketplace this week.

Though if the ludicrous marketplace performance details were right it would be an instant win in things like Neofly   😄 😄

According to the MS Marketplace the Widgeon has:

Speed: Mach 0.82

Ceiling: 39,800 feet

Max Takeoff weight :  213,800 lb

Fuel Capacity: 8700 gallons

.. and comes with A320 style Leap-1A turbo fan engines 😄

We actually opted to not have that block of info in the listing yet somehow the info got added that was not ours. I informed the Market Place and it has been edited with the correct info. Was funny tho.

Is the famed TV island destination for "The Plane" due to be updated in the next World update?

Pretty sure it already will be covered in the sim as it is; the lagoon where it 'landed' in the show was actually Baldwin Lake, California.

Now if you can get the water to splash up on the windscreen like in the real version video you will have something.

Maybe he meant the movie in Fiji... or the reboot in Puerto Rico.  🤣
