Please critique this FS2020 update process

Featured Replies

Please help me to create a FS2020 update process by critiquing the below sequence. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks, RobertR

1.       Backup then empty FS2020’s Community folder

2.       Turn OFF FS2020’s rolling cache then delete rolling cache

3.       Open the Microsoft Store app and run the Microsoft Flight Simulator update

4.       Run FS2020 which will bring up the Installation Manager showing that there’s a new update to install.

5.       Run the update

6.       Go to the FS2020 Market Place and select Free Content then download the new World Update

7.       Go to the FS2020 Content Manager and look for new updates

8.       Exit the sim and reboot the machine

9.       Locate the FS2020 executable, go to properties, disable full screen optimizations, click on Change High DPI Settings then click Override High DPI Scaling Behavior, click OK OK.

10.   Run FS2020

11.   Shutdown FS2020

12.   Restore community folder

I’m on Steam but for me the process was:

Ran Windows Update. There was an update, can’t recall details. Updated and PC asked for restart. Did that.

Read the release notes… go into Community folder and delete all flightsim.to add on airports that were listed in the release notes as having been updated in some way. I had 3 or 4. I did NOT delete anything else in Community. I don’t think it is necessary.

Next, run Steam, let it do the small update there which happens automatically and so fast you can miss it.

Then, run the Sim and do the core update.

Once in the sim, update first Content Manager, then the new World Update stuff in the Marketplace. (Asobo have not specified which should be done first so I don’t think it really makes a difference but this order makes sense to me).

Once everything is done, close down the sim, and restart PC.

On restart, did an update to Navigraph and A32NX, checked Orbx and PMDG operation centres for any updates (there were none).

Loaded up the sim, checked through all settings options, cleared Rolling Cache and….

Happy days!😃

I am curious about this, what does this do?

I follow a similar sequence, with some minor differences.

1. I use Addons Linker, so no need to back up anything.  Once click, and it takes less than a second to empty the Community folder.

2. I don't use a rolling cache, so nothing to delete here.

3-5. same

6,7.  I reverse, Content Manager updates first, new content from Market Place second.  I don't know that it makes a difference.

8. same

9. I never changed anything with the executable.

10. Restore links to Community with Addons Linker, again less than a second.

11. Run  FS2020, don't bother with a second shutdown before Community adds.

I never delete all the files in community, I just rename the community folder instead. And the create another new folder named community which is empty of course, and then do the update. Then delete the new empty community folder and rename the full one back to Community.

That is truly a waste of time... and accomplishes nothing... Sorry!

Maybe, ubt the time wasted is only about 30 seconds at most.

Fine, I go and get a cup of coffee, also kills some time.. but I do not suggest to other users that this accomplishes anything and should be part of the process....

No Bert, this is good advice and definitely accomplishes something. Coffee first, sim later. It’s what keeps the wings level. It also prevents CTD’s…. For you, not your PC. 😁

Turn on computer, get Microsoft Store update, Install Mandatory Update, Install World Update, Install Content Manager Updates, Restart Sim - DONE

This is a myth... sorry.  What would that accomplish?

"Then delete the new empty community folder and rename the full one back to Community."

This simply restores the folder to what it was before the update..  The update does not touch this folder..

for todays update i got myself reading so many different ways of getting it done at one point i felt like i had to go in the back of a dark alley talk to a guy that knows a guy and than go to a dark bar somewhere downtown to see another guy that knows all the other guys and handed over a key and finally come back home and download the update with that key .
