Pumped storage has been around for a long time, and I am pretty sure a bunch of new sites are being evaluated in the western half of the US right now.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

What fascinates me is flywheels. Amazing things. A nice big heavy flywheel with a very low friction bearing will spin and spin and spin.
