Anyone using a 12900K for MSFS ?

Featured Replies

Wow did they omit the soldered IHS on those chips perhaps?  That is just so much hotter I can't imagine what the explanation would be.

Temperatures like those what I have, have been reported by others too with 12900K CPU stress tests. That's why I was wondering how Gerard did overclock and what his temperatures were. My fans don't rise too much in MSFS, so I guess my temperatures in MSFS are still on a reasonable level. I have not yet installed my diagnostic tools so I cannot say exactly for now.

Currently I let AI tweaker do the OC based on stability and temps.

I haven’t looked into the cpu temps yet but will do that today.

My 7940X with its 14 cores @ 4.7 Ghz showed temps 54-78 degrees Celsius ( liquid cooled ).

I am on the new MSI Meg cooler and haven't hit more than 55C... I idle ~35C and under load sit between 50-55C

What cooler are you using?  There are tests that show existing coolers with the Alder Lake offset screws do not make adequate contact with the 12K chips...  I tried a Corsair prior to the MSI and was at ~80C, the MSI cooler is ~ 1/2 that....

Both were triple fan setups as well.  I do have to say, just taking a quick glance at the display on the CPU cooler itself is absolutely awesome too.  Pricey bit of kit but at twice the cooling performance of the Corsair it was a no brainer.

Also, for those with Alder Lake the new Process Lasso actually lists your P-Cores vs E-Cores.  Just yesterday I created a CPU set for all my P-Cores and assigned that to P3D.  Put everything else on my E-Cores and flight yesterday was my smoothest yet.  So the latest process Lasso can also help break out the P-Cores for you.

That's interesting. I have the GB Aorus Waterforce X 360 AIO for CPU cooling which has an adjustment set.for the LGA 1700 platform. But I will check again if everthing fits well.

My idle temps are like yours, 35-38 °C. But running a CPU stresstest like Cinebench 23 multicore test, the temperatures reach ~90 °C easliy. Your temperatures under load, is this with MSFS or did you perform a separate stress test?

Soldered Noel.

His 85 to 90 in RealBench with no overlocking does seem high. Depends on ambient temp, cooler in use and even maturity of BIOS, whether temps are being reported accurately, all manner of variables.

He may not be overclocking... but does he have MCE on and thus overlocking all cores to the max turbo frequency  permanently?

The other point is that I recall Intel abandoned power limits, so the chip can essentially suck all the juice it likes. Multithreaded benchmarks can go right up to 300W. Hence the requirement for a decent cooler.

Very interesting regarding existing coolers with Alder Lake. https://hothardware.com/news/existing-cpu-coolers-struggle-alder-lake-lga-1700-bracket

I went with the new MSI Meg CoreS360 and although I haven't stress tested at 5.0 in P3D I sit @55C   I also use PL to disable the E-Cores for P3D and just run on P-Cores and set to high priority.  Clouds raise temps by ~7C   so 48C on a clear day 55C with clouds.

Do the E cores offer any advantage in terms of background applications? I'm wondering if its actually a good idea to disable them. Maybe not. Have you tested both ways?

Hi Martin,

I haven't noticed any ill effects yet however I do run most of my ancillary apps on a client PC over WideFS.  To the contrary, performance got much better when I created a CPU Group within ProcessLasso and Assigned P3D to just the -P Cores.

I also noticed the lag in my Opencockpits devices (MCP, EFIS, Radio) went away entirely when I set up Process Lasso to limit P3D to the P Cores.

With E-Cores enabled I had stuttering/lag but again, I run everything over WideFS via a client PC...

Hope that helps

That looks a very impressive AIO. 💪

Can you hear the pump? And what about the fan that's mounted to the pump housing? Its a baby fan so is that noisy?

Twice? Cant be twice surely?

Thanks Martin, I wanted something with LGA1700 support out of the box.    It is actually completely silent and the little display is brilliant. Also has a fan on the CPU cooler itself to displace the M.2 heat.  I love being able to have a quick glance at CPU temps right through the side of the case.

Not sure if it is actually twice, you are correct but I was seeing 90C with the H150 and the Adapter screws Corsair sent, I am 45-55C with the MSI.  Idle is 34C.  The LGA 1700 bracket on the MSI was ~1-2mm further out on all four corners.  Doesn't sound like a lot but I guess it makes a substantial difference as to the contact patch with Alder Lake.  It is a mighty AIO.

Yeah looks like that adapter was dodgy re contact. But yes, looks like its a great performing cooler. From the small number of views available it looks like it's up there with the best.

I of course am the worldwide authority and grade one advocate of the NH-D15S. So I scoff at your primitive aqua cooler gizmo. 😉
