The "I don't get it" post...

I think the difference between my settings and Mitch's come down to using the PMDG 777 vs a G/A bird...  The settings Mitch listed were just too much for a PMDG at an add-on airport with full traffic.

This is actually what the developer of FFTF Dynamic confirmed more than once.

Cheers,

PS: anything but Unlimited puts more load on cpu due to generating more frames ahead. On the other hand if you don't control FFTF somehow you'll eventually see blurries and missing autogen just in case somebody forgets.

This could explain why I am struggling horribly with Blurries right now...  I can't seem to get AA/AF to apply for some reason and it gets worse at altitude.  With 4.5 I think I did have a entry in my .cfg for .33 for FFTF...   Hmmmm

I'd either apply the hotfix which you mentioned above that you haven't, (it addresses this issue) or reduce the road traffic to 0 until you do.

So I don't think that was the issue.  I was already on V.30 which addressed traffic, V.31 was for the runway lights during the day.... I was able to replicate the issue with .31 as well.

With that being said I may have uncovered the issue and I hope I can help some others.  I will post this in a stand alone thread as well. I pulled my hair out yesterday trying to figure this out. I am on a brand new vanilla Win10 install. As I mentioned earlier my system was absolutely being brought to it's knees, down to 1-2 FPS, painful to even look at. It seemed to happen about an hour into the flight out of nowhere.  I tried every setting in P3D, reduced everything and it appeared to resolve itself, then 3-4 hours later it happened again and this time I exited out of P3d entirely in frustration.

Then I stress tested my machine, maxxed my CPU temps at 80C, Ran 3DMark and finished 99% of all machines despite a bit on the low end for my specific specs.  I tried adjusting the BIOS, played with C States.  Played with CPU affinities, priorities etc etc etc.  I disabled Road traffic in P3D, same result after ~ an hour of flying, installed the latest hotfix and had the exact same issue.  I feel bad for my wife with how frustrated I was yesterday!!

Then I noticed incredibly high Network interface usage while P3D was active.  Hmmm  This isn't MSFS so what was pinning my network interface?  A bit more digging and I noticed the OneDrive and Bluetooth icons in my systray.  Ok, I had those disabled on prior installs so lets go ahead and shut them down as well.  In prior iterations and installs of Windows it OneDrive would load into systray however it was disabled.  It turns out that behavior appears to have changed.  When Windows forces you to use Hello (which I always disable and go back to a local account login anyway) that by default enables OneDrive to sync your files tied to your hotmail account.  I had a notification in OneDrive that ALL of my files were successfully backed up.  The only time that could have happened was while P3D was running though.  I "believe" the backup process mid sim absolutely crippled P3D.  I was able to get the same results I've seen in others videos.  1-2 FPS with huge 5-6 second pauses between frames.  Thus far with OneDrive disabled I've had no issues what-so-ever.  Able to crank my settings back up, re-enable EA and I am exactly 60 minutes into a 10 hour haul as I type this...  Fingers crossed I'll be back 10 hours from now to confirm but as of right now performance is showing no issues or slow downs.  Fingers crossed!

Edit:  NOPE!!!   not 5 minutes after typing this I got the Device Hung with 496.76 and the entire system froze...    Man, I was rock solid on 4.5 for years prior to this.  I am gutted.  Going to try and restore 4.5 or just give up on FS altogether. I give up...

Will give that a try as well Ray, thank you.  Was SOOOO excited for this and have spent the past two days utterly miserable.  Really thought I had it this morning, performance was stellar right up until it wasn't 😞

Now I fear I de-activated so many things on my 4.5 build to use them in 5.3 going back to 4.5 would be an absolute nightmare.  I haven't had a system crash like this in years.  At some point driving a race car becomes less about excitement and more about "what's going to break next" and sadly right now I feel the same about flight sim 😞  No more enjoyment just what's going to break next.  Quite frustrating indeed.

Hang in there...you WILL sort out your own unique system...your own unique set of hardware and software.   I had about 1/2 hour or so  first start bumpy ride with v5.3, but then, just seemed to hit the 'this n' that' right...and it's been solid and fabulous ever since.

Thanks Mitch, Always assume the issue is on my end first.  Just at a bit of wits end as to where to start next.  Going to roll back driver and add the registry entries per Ray's suggestion and give that a whirl.

Also wondering if I have done something wrong with all my add-ons/layering that could be contributing to the crashes.  Between UT, GEPRO, ORBX I'm not even certain I got those right.  Could they be layered incorrectly or conflicting... Then after updating 5.3 to V.31 this morning I had to re-verify all those files which I did but who knows if I messed something up in that process as well. I'm definitely under the assumption I screwed something up here.  😞

At this point randomly yes...

Yesterday performance was good then suddenly degraded.  This morning performance was great then suddenly crashed, no degradation.  Yesterday it happened 1 hour into the flight, cleared up then happened again 4 hours into the same flight so I quit out.  Today the whole sim froze 1 hour 5 minutes into a flight with device hung which means the sim had been running for ~ 1 hour 45 minutes at that point with my preflight etc etc.

Two different flight plans but both KEWR-PHNL to try and stress the sim for an extended period over a long haul.

weird.  Assumed you tried the usual remedies?  delete prepar3d.cfg, delete shaders, DDU and fresh install of display driver  ?

Might be worth jumping over to the LM to report. Appears others are seeing similar behaviour (although your symptoms may not match these exactly it’s worth deciding if you can value add to this thread) https://www.prepar3d.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6315&t=143918&start=135

Yep, that seems to be my issue indeed...  Some seem to have solved by reverting to 5.2.  I never had 5.2 came straight from 4.5 so may just go all the way back there although I have since found some system issues (see below) that I have resolved so going to stick at it for a bit.

That and beyond some which did indeed reveal errors on my part!  Turns out I was using the add-on.xml files from P3DV4 into V5 once I had changed pointers in the files etc.  Some of those had a layer number associated with them.  So P3D ended up with double scenery entries in some cases.  It would try to add the scenery as it should but then ALSO add an entry at the layer number from my old install.  Hence when I scrolled down I would see the second entry with either a (1) or a (!) and it was greyed out.

In addition for some reason ORBX was getting added twice.  I had done a verify files this morning and thought all was ok but somehow ORBX was getting added directly to the scenery.cfg and also being added via scenery_add_ons.xml so I had double ORBX entries as well...

I have now removed Orbx entirely,

restored scenery.cfg

restored scenery_add_ons.xml

Modified everything in my V5 Add-Ons directory to ensure the add-on.xml is correct

Added everything except Orbx back one at a time

Verified everything in my Add Ons folder, my scenery.cfg and my scenery_add_ons_xml  are correct.

Now I need to figure out what to do with Orbx.  I already have UT and GEPro, do I even use Orbx?  I own Orbx global, how does that pair with UTX and GEPro?

So indeed, despite having the exact same symptoms as the others posting I #1 had a definite issue with OneDrive syncing that presented as a P3D issue "and" I had somehow hosed my own add-ons, scenery.cfg and scenery_add_ons.xml without even realizing it....

Part of the issue is say what we want about MSFS and it's forced updates but after really playing with P3D the past few days having files in appdata, P3D root, Program Data and the Add-Ons directory is a nightmare...  I can't count the amount of times I went looking in my roaming/LM directory only to realize that there was another file buried somewhere in the /Program Data directory in Windows as well.

I would actually say I find this entire upgrade process with P3D to be a nightmare but at least it's not "forced."   Client, Content, Scenery, Full install, delete user files, delete shaders, wait for developer to issue point update,  it is just so much more complicated than getting a notification an update is available, clicking yes and the entire process being automated...

I had a layering issue, Paul...make sure that your two Misty Fjords (if you run that) is BELOW all your Orbx layers...and make sure that the two Misty Fjords Upper and Lower is exactly that...the Lower below the Upper. After I did that...I had smooth sailing, but before...it was an FPS and graphics DOG SHOW... Paul, what I did, was after I figured out what was happening I used the XML install method in the ADD ON's folder for the TONS of M.F. content...and then opened Orbx Central and re-verified all my titles...and then, finally, did a Orbx re-sync to P3D.  After that...wham bam...performance (FPS and fluid animation), with my in sim settings that I have published here.

Whatever LM did to this favorite sim of mine has been miraculous!  I fly every day, several times a day, and since 5.3 HF+1 came out, my flights are smooth, stutter-free, and fluid.  Just using Active Sky, Season Manager, with EA on, Volumetric clouds off.  Sliders are full right for the most part, and although I'd like the cockpits to be a bit brighter, I use the spotlight (\) whenever I need more illumination on specific instruments. Road traffic is at 25, and ships and watercraft both at 82. Just started a flight tonight at 8PM from KABE to KMIA.  Departed KMIA and ended my night with a short flight to KMCO (love being able to get near KMCO and land without any issues).  I set the time to 12 noon so that I could fly in the daylight and enjoy the scenery below. I change views frequently from VC to spot view to wing view, etc. I can remember just recently before this version, that doing that caused great hesitation or freezing at times.

My fingers are crossed and I sincerely hope I don't wake up from this dream. but Sesquashtoo hit the nail on the head.  This sim is deserving of more attention from the scenery and addon developers.  MSFS is good, but P3d is still my favorite flight simulator.

Thanks, LM.

Really appreciate all the support Ses...  I'm going to do a flight with 4.5 before heading to Radiology today then come back to 5.3 refreshed tomorrow.

I also noticed almost everyone having an issue is in 5.3 with PMDG, FSL etc.  When I load up the F-35 or a GA bird my shorter hops were like yours spectacular.  It's when I load up the 777, NGX or QW787 and go to a major airport at some point the flight tanks.

I can't blame P3D with all my personal install issues though, just have to assume the issue was on my side but it is disconcerting seeing the posts here and on the LM forum of users with show stopping issues with 5.3 that very closely resembled what I was seeing all when using FSL, PMDG or QW add-ons.

No doubt 5.3 is light years above 4.5 though, I'm trying to get there I promise 🙂

Cheers,

-Paul

Paul...what is/are your tower fan spec's...could you possibly be overheating either  the CPU, GPU, or memory?  That would certainly  (over time) heat accumulation inside the tower/case could be it.  When was the last time you took off all the fan shrouds and vacuumed and their blades and cages clean?  When was the last time you used a can of compressed air and special cleaning fluid to power spray the CPU, and control chip cooling fins?  I do this the minute i see accumulation of dust and dirt on either my fans, or visibly on the cooling fins of any and all tech that has them installed.  You might be hitting a threshold that destabilizes the system and perhaps has nothing at all to do with the actual software (et all) you are using.  I'd do a full clean of your interior...and THEN...I'd run P3D WITHOUT the case cover on...the same route that put you to a device hang...and if THAT runs until the final's...then put on the case cover and RUN AGAIN!. If you get a hang...then you know that even with cleaning, you are overheating (the system at that location in the room, corner (?)  near a heating source, whatever...and will have to deal with that.  If you run with the cover closed to the Final  Approach, then you need to remove dust and debris on a regular basis.   I do...and can only say that I feel it is most beneficial to the system and no tech hang-ups...
