January 1, 20224 yr I upgraded from 16GB to 32GB when I changed the processor from an i3-9100F to a i7-9700K. Flight Sim's usage of memory hardly changed with the upgrade. I never experience stutters so don't know if it helped with that. Using many different system performance monitors - I never see the memory in use (committ) by Flight Sim exceed about 14 GB when in VR mode and 8 - 10 GB when in 2D mode. I am very careful to kill any process running on the sim system that is not necessary for Flight Sim to run so other processes use very little memory. Flying in 2D mode - With my RTX 3060 Ti I am Main Thread limited. My 8-core machine runs at about 55% CPU busy with most of the work being done by 3-processors. The GPU runs about 60% busy. With almost all settings at Ultra / 200 I see 30 FPS flying around San Diego with LVFR KSAN loaded along with dozens of other scenery enhancements and 50+ when flying over SoCal mountains. Flying in VR mode - With my RTX 3060 Ti I am GPU limited (stays at 99% utilization) with 8GB GPU memory being fully used. My 8-core machine runs at about 35% CPU busy with most of the work being done by 3-processors. My FPS is 20 in downtown San Diego and about 32 - 35 out over the mountains. BUT - memory is cheap so I would do the upgrade - Just don't expect a huge increase in performance. January 6, 20224 yr Author Well I got an extra 16GB (2x8GB DDR4 3200Mhz) and wow what a difference, no change in settings yet but did a flight yesterday and not a single lag, shutter or delay anywhere to be seen. Will look to ramp up some settings to see if I can get a slight improvement in places in due course.
April 14, 20224 yr I have another 16 coming today to add to my existing 16, to total 32. I hope to see these half-second pauses disappear. FPS is great but I get periodic pausing going on which I think may be related to paging etc mentioned above. i7-12700K, 16Gb DDR4 3600, RTX3070ti 8Gb Regards, Max (YSSY) i7-12700K | Corsair Vengeance LPX 64GB 3600MHz DDR4 | Gigabyte RTX4090 24Gb | Gigabyte Z690 AORUS ELITE DDR4 | Corsair HX1200 PSU
April 14, 20224 yr Going 16GB to 32GB reduced some types of stutter but not others. It is going to very much depend on your individual setup as to how much benefit it gives.
April 14, 20224 yr I upgraded my aging system from 16GB to 32GB about a year back. While I can’t say it noticeably improved performance, I do feel that the sim has been stable, smooth and pretty rock solid since then. I like to fly in/out of detailed airports using A32NX on flights longer than 1 hour which will place additional demands on memory. Plus AIG, GAIST etc. Would I do the upgrade again - absolutely yes! April 14, 20224 yr Before SU 5/6 I have seen up to 25-26 GB RAM usage (high LOD settings) on my system. Now it it is always below 20. Maybe 16 GB RAM is enough but I would recommend 32 to have a some overhead.
