Kodiak (and comparable planes) flightplans

Just by browsing possible locations in the world map?

Yep. First I decide which part of the planet I want to visit. I have a few favorite locations (Norway, PNG, Alaska, New Zealand) but every now and then I try something new to keep things interesting. Then I simply look at the map and try to find an interesting area (in my case something that's not too flat). After that I pick (rather random) starting location (with parking spots because I like to start cold and dark) OR landing location and after that I pick a destination or departure airport at a distance that suits me for that moment. Simple as that. Finding the right length of the flight often takes the most time but I'm talking about minutes here. 😉

I don't like those sites with plans at all because you usually don't get a real good idea of where you will be flying and usually those trips are too long or too short. It takes more time to find an interesting flight there than to manually pick one.

I did use Skypark for a while but even there I often feel too limited because of the location or the length of the trip. What I dislike even more are thos addons that force you to use a homebase... booooooooring. (I don't like any addon that forces me to fly somewhere, I suppose.)

I know it's quite realistic to have a plane at a certain location and to fly in and out of that airport all the time but well... screw realism in this regard. MSFS offers me the entire globe in awesome detail and I'd like to see most of it and not just the same boring airport all the time. 😉 Handpicking the departure and destination is quite easy and results in the most fun for me.

I'm not very creative when it comes to pick a destination. I do have favourites as well, go by weather, (Windy.com). If I want something different and sometimes spectacular – who's better for that than James Bond?

Get inspired have a good one

Hi all, after watching several videos, I am really tempted to get this Kodiak bird. But for this kind of planes (also the upcoming Twin Otter and the default Cessna 206), I always struggle to find good and interesting routes, I totally lack ideas. No issues with GA sightseeing or IFR airliner flights, but for this type of planes, flying in and out of small airfields is what makes it fun, no? So where do you guys get your ides from? Just by browsing possible locations in the world map? By using an addon tool where you can select flights? By looking for real world operations? Happy for a bunch of ideas here 🙂 Thanks

Have a look here:

... and enjoy!

I'm still exploring the Pacific North West up to and including Alaska, a hangover from my FSX days - this is perfect for that.

A recurring question so I will make my recurring answer.

I simply use Google Earth. Spinning the globe a couple of times,  zooming in a location that takes my fancy, selecting a city, finding another airfield  in an one-hour radius or less for the aircraft I fly , slanting a bit GE to see if there is an interesting en route and approach relief  and if so here I go doing my planning.

I've been flying all over the place (I mean planet Earth) in this sim and can assure you that you are almost never disappointed.

For me it’s mainly Skyvector for GA flights and FlightAware for airline flights.

For GA it’s about looking for the weather I want to fly in, interesting areas of the world etc.  Skyvector is great for this at a glance as you can look for green dots at VFR airports, you can turn on an IFR layer etc.  I also keep a text document on my desktop with flight ideas that either I think of or that I hear about from others in places such as this forum.

For airline flights I’ll usually have an airport(s), weather and/or aircraft in mind that I want to base a flight off (aircraft choice for airliners obviously a bit limited in MSFS right now), then I find a real world flight to duplicate.

Thanks guys, plenty (!) of good tips and heaps of information here, I guess I am off to get myself a copy of this Kodiak now 😉

... and a bit more inspiration here - some double:

Thought of another idea to keep me flying this evening.

The mountain bike company Santa Cruz popped into my head so I have decided to fly a full load of four passengers and cargo in the tundra version from KWVI near Santa Cruz, California and I'm heading to one of the most well known mountain biking resorts in the world. Landing at CYPS near Whistler, Canada.

I may attempt this idea again of thinking about a company and an excursion they could possibly plan.
