Wing Commander?

Featured Replies

I was hooked on Wing Commander from the very first game (which was amazing for the day). The movie--not so impressed. Anyway, since Star Citizen seems to be stalled and I don't like multiplayer games anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a Wing Commander type experience. I know you can get the games on GOG, but I've read where they don't actually run that well on modern computers.

Wing commander sure brings back memories of a Commodore Amiga.

I second the suggestion about Elite Dangerous ( in fact, it's the only game I really "play", Flight sims are work for me... ).

It is, however, a markedly different kind of game compared to Wing Commander. In fact, it's likely you'll find it to be fairly similar to MSFS, in a way that has very unstructured gameplay, with not much "story", other than the one you make up in your mind. It's really the king of the "Open World" concept. Ship vs Ship combat is very rewarding, because the "Flight model" is very good, but if you just want to fly a ship to the far reaches of the galaxy to explore, you can do that as well.

A possible alternative, "No Man's Sky". More colorful, playful and impressive on ground ( planets really feels "alive", with plants and animals ) than Elite Dangerous, but also less scientifically plausible and while the graphic is nice, it's still a bit too gamey for my tastes. And the flight model space combat doesn't feel nearly as good or realistic as Elite.

The game which is supposed to be the true successor to Wing Commander, is probably "Squadron 42", Star Citizen spinoff, using the same game engine, but with a structured story to follow. Or possibly "Starfield", the next big title from Bethesda ( now part of Microsoft ), which sounds like "Fallout in Space", so it should be both Open World and Story-based too. But nobody really knows when these will really come out so, as of today, I still think Elite Dangerous is the best.

Thanks, guys. My hesitation about multiplayer games (besides my obvious misanthropy) is working hard to to build up to something decent ship-wise and then a 12-year-old with better twitch reflexes jumping my six going "pew! pew!" Have no idea whether that's a legitimate concern. I'll check it out on Steam to see if I want to add it to Panzer Corps and NieRautomata, which I sometimes play solely for the excellent game play and physics engine.

One of my best childhood friends was a Wing Commander.  Col. Eric Wheaton. 71st Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron. I know this has nothing to do with the original topic but it brought back so many memories. I apologize for this off-topic post......Doug

I belong to a session group in Elite: Dangerous that is strictly PvE.  No 12 year old's jumping your six.  It's also possible to play the game solo in the exact same environment as everyone else... same servers, etc.  You just don't see any other players.
