If you will ever program something you will hear about garbage collection etc. Additionally some software are programmed to „use“ whatever is available. i can guarantee you will will not get a single FPS in not a single game because of the 12 vs 24 GB VRAM of the 3090. Maybe. I have heard this mentioned before that an application will allocate all available memory or at least a lot more than they will ever use. I am a developer. I have never written a game or an application like MSFS. I worked for a company that made compilers and I was on the IDE/Tools team. I have never heard of anyone allocating more memory than they think they will ever use. That is just poor programming. I do concede that I do not know enough about this type of development, and you could be correct. Again, you could be correct that there is not one 1 FPS different from a 12GB 3080ti vs a 24GB 3090. I do see that I have used 11+ gigs in Baron G58. How much of that 11+ was actually being used? I do not know. I would hope that once MSFS needed more vram, it would allocate in 2Gb chunks. 9950X3D, PNY 5090, 64GB DDR5 6000, MSI X870-P, GIGABYTE AORUS Gen5 2TB NVMe, 3440x1440 AW3423DW gsync ultimate.
January 28, 20224 yr Well, I'm running about two sliders on Ultra and everything else on High at 2K and my FPS in busy add-on AP's like KFLL are at about 25 FPS in the Kodiak (frames locked at 30)... Is this expected? Chris Camp
January 28, 20224 yr Author thank you all for your thoughts. there was a comment on if I will be using 4K. yes the idea is to get a 4K monitor also. and have a system that works for many years. I got my last desktop from puget in 2012 and still have it

January 30, 20224 yr I run MSFS 2020 on a 7-year old PC with 8 gigs of system ram, 1080p, on an ullrawidescreen monitor, all settings at medium, and get about 23-28 fps. I never use default airports: either Asobo handcrafted oners, freeware ones from flightsim.to, or payware airports. It amazes me how much time people spend worrying about their hardware. I rather spend that time flying and enjoying MSFS 2020. I also don't develop a rash just because the sim sometimes stutters or takes its time loading scenery. Edited January 30, 20224 yr by Ricardo41

The significant bit there is "1080p" as most games including MSFS are fine at 1080p. Even 2k/1440p is not that demanding overall. The people buying high specced machines are usually trying for 4K and often as not even looking at running VR. Basically a 4K monitor may only be $200 dearer than the equivalent 1080p screen - but it can had more like $2000 to the cost of the system needed to maintain the same frame rates. Then you suggest having a 1080p monitor and upscale to 4K? Or what do you need the 3080ti for in anything lower than 4K? @PoeticPhoenix3 if you want to have a future proof 4K system > 3080ti or 3090 Edited January 30, 20224 yr by MySound

The point still stands. I don't subscribe to buying "adequate" equipment with no margin to only have to turn around and buy AGAIN later on when more resources may be needed down the line. (The sim is relatively young) And FYI yes people do increase render scaling for various reasons and that requires a bit more margin.
