SWS RV14 Thoughts and Shots

Featured Replies

That could my new mini review thing... lol

Anyway, like most everyone into GA aircraft - I purchased the SWS RV14 today.  Overall - yes I like it.  I like the sounds, the agile control feel.  I'm using TDS GTNxi in my version - everything seems to work except the LPV glide path - but it will likely work come SU9 - which brings some much needed Lvars.  Does the rnav glide path work for PMS users?  I mean the right way (not the default wrong way where it comes up from the bottom of the gauge)...

Anyway there are only about 5-6 paint schemes so I've already started on a somewhat simple one (yeah I've said this before lol) - no clue when it'll be finished.

I'd like to do some more cruise altitude testing but it feels slightly sluggish (speed-wise) for a brand new RV14.  I am also getting a bug where I cannot use my flight controls to manipulate the flaps settings - I must use the clickspot.  Also I'm getting the stall horn and subsequent stall well before end of the white arc with full flaps, a headwind, and much lighter load than max gross.  One thing I've got no clue about is slow speed handling of the RV14.  Perhaps @Doering could tell us what to expect?  Is the RV14 controllable up until the actual stall or will it start to mush around?  About 10 kias above end of white arc the plane starts to drop and about 3-5 kts above the arc my plane plummets hehe.

Van's site says should be getting about 170 ktas at 8000 / 75% power.  I feel like I'm getting 165 or so if I am full throttle with leaning and prop at 2500 rpm (likely above 75%).  Anyway I'll test that later.  Stall speed book value is 47 kias or so...  as described above - I'm stalling well before that at less than gross.

Anyway I took this thing for a whirl around Block Island State Airport KBID - a few radar approaches (like the RNAV 28 in a few of my shots), then later tookoff again and beat up the pattern.  I'm sure the residents loved me!  I enjoyed the visibility from the cockpit, the sounds, the working breakers - good immersion overall.  If you like GA even a tiny bit - it's a no brainer purchase!  A few users have mentioned slightly lower fps - it's likely the standby AI like in their Kodiak.  Pull the breaker for now or do the edit like we did in the kodiak.

Sweet! Switch that left side Garmin unit for an iPad, and you pretty much have my panel in the RV-9A! Always love those sunrise or sunset pics! Very nice! You also fly with the same pilots that I use!

I just read your text at the top. The RV14 is heavier than the RV9. My stall speed is 42 knots! I don't know what the stall speed is for the RV14. My aircraft want's to glide and glide. A slight gust of wind and it will float down the runway. I try to cross the numbers at 70 KIAS. Bleed off speed while setting closer to the runway and I am almost touching down in the low 50's KIAS. Make a gentle flare to grease it in. The nosewheel is a strictly taxing nosewheel and is not meant to taxi above 53 KIAS. The airplane control only gets mushy below 50 KIAS.

Stall speeds are 62kts clean, 51 full flaps. The stall horn sounds off at 70% of stall AoA, which is built-into MSFS. Asobo said they will look into it but we have nothing new on it yet

We have a fix ready which will sort all the reported systems bugs -so far- and we will look into improving the performance further after this one.

Great shots, by the way!

Could have done with a few more. 😀

I noticed when I pulled the breaker for this (one of the "spare" breakers I think) it also prevented the autopilot from following either HDG or NAV modes so I left it on and ate the FPS drop.

Nice shots!
