Approach on GPS without transition

Featured Replies

Is there a way to select an approach on any of the systems (GNS 530, G1000, etc) without being forced to also select a transition? I've flown with multiple navigation systems IRL and in XPlane and transition are entirely optional. What's the deal in MSFS currently?

Yeah that's been an issue with me as well, only the WT CJ4 "fixed" that
No idea why it is forced in the first place

thanks for confirming. it seems very strange, I'm trying to understand the logic behind it but haven't found any documentation or explanation of why it is that way

Hi there,

The good old Garmin GTN 750 gives you straight in approaches. Available for most of the 3rd party general aircrafts from TDS.

PC: Gigabyte X670 Aorus Elite, AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D, Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4080 Super Aorus Master, DDR5 G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo 2X32 GB, Corsair HX 1000, Fractal Torrent, Samsung LC32 / G7 1440P.

The free Marketplace G1000 NXi does not force you to choose a labeled transition, and you are free to instead choose a vectors-only approach (VTF or Vectors-To-Final in Garmin lingo). Keep in mind though that generally you will be flying some transition; IRL you would not usually receive clearance without a valid approach transition, as those approach entry points are there purposely for traffic flow.

yeah I use the G1000NXi mod and it's great, also allows visual approaches with vertical guidance for fields with no listed approaches. but doesn't help with most of the older planes with the good ol' GNS 430s & 530s.

ya I use the PMS GTN addon and it's a lot of fun, but isn't integrated into a lot of 3rd party planes still, unfortunately. eg.the Twin Otter.

Wish there was a way to allow approaches without transition. I'm surprised the GNS MOD doesn't fix this. maybe the devs are working on it

Are you asking about the IAF's?  Or an actual transitions?  I think all the default based avionics require you to select the transitions.  I'm pretty sure the G1000 NXi, PMS GTN (on WTT mode only), and of course the TDS GTN Xi allows to only select an IAF, or vectors to final, or the "central" IAF which may result in a hold in lieu of procedure turn.

I've circled the transitions in red here

IRL I could commence this approach from all fixes listed here except IRORE (there are some angular requirements).  In that case, the facility providing radar services would need to depict the final approach course on their video map.  If they had that they could vector you to final similar to an ILS.

WT is working on the 530/430 so you may have to be patient for them to finish the work..

How do i do a visual approach with vertical guidance on a field without RNAV or ILS? I also use the WT G1000 but dont know how to do that. Could you please explain?

Hi tried it again yesterday but could not find such a option on the G1000 and also googling it did not help.

Can someone please clear up how this " visual approaches with vertical guidance for fields with no listed approaches" works with the G1000? Or is it just VS mode set to -500 feet/minute? but then i dont see where the guidance would be.
