I think 16:9 would solve the problem because it more streched in the heigh than leight, but would a 34" 21:9 would do the same job? What is the overall best experience? I hate to say this and please hold the tomatoes, bottles and cans. From a real world pilot perspective, VR is about as close and real as it gets. Nothing beats the immersion of sitting on the flight deck. I find myself doing the same motions and movements as I do in the real jet. Yeah, it can be pricey. You need a good CPU and GPU. There is still some work to be done in MSFS to make it as good as DCS. There is a little nausea until your eyes and body adjust. Not bad in MSFS unless you are flying fighters like in DCS. To stay alive, you have to keep your enemy insight as you maneuver. That first hard turn as you crane your head over your shoulder will get you little dizzy the first few times, but shortly after you will be calculating lead/lag angles. But, if you can get through all of that jazz, it's as real as it gets. Rick Rick D http://g5flyer.tumblr.com/
July 25, 20223 yr I highly recommend going ultrawide. A 34" if on a budget or 38-40" if you have the space. You can thank me later. I'm down to these two: Amazon has a low price than anywhere on this one (has a QD dot pixels).https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09GWD6TWX/ =================== According to the camel, the current Amazon price or $435 is a steal... https://camelcamelcamel.com/product/B09GWD6TWX A bigger monitor will be more immersive because of how focal points work and the fact your brain knows how far back you are and how big something you are looking at is. Though the room itself will play a part as well, how clean the desk area is and how far back the monitor is positioned. If you have room to properly position the monitor, the 40" is better... 32" is still kind of small to our brains when sitting at the correct viewing distance, any closer and I would feel too close. July 26, 20223 yr the Alienware QD-OLED is stunning! superb colour accuracy & gamut, has an inbuilt pixel refresh system, is a proper monitor with tilt & swivel & DP input, G-SYNC Ultimate, 3 year warranty, 34" ultrawide fits comfortably on standard desk with room for flight controls...
July 26, 20223 yr Those Alienware monitors rule the roost, but are a bit expensive. 13 hours ago, G550flyer said: From a real world pilot perspective, VR is about as close and real as it gets. I am going to try an Oculus Metaquest 2, but as I have gotten a bit older (not that old), sometimes have eye issues mainly if I am not that well rested the night before. Hopefully it doesn't wreak havoc on my already strained eye sight 🙂 That is why I avoided it up to now, hopefully the Metaquest 2 is as good as the reviews are. Should be here this weekend, my first real dip into VR, well tried it once but that was on an old cruddy set. Edited July 26, 20223 yr by Alpine Scenery AMD 5800x | Nvidia 3080 (12gb) | 64gb ram
July 26, 20223 yr Keeping down the price, I'm going to my local BestBuy for to pick up this which I bought online a few minutes ago. https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/dell-s3222dgm-curved-qhd-165hz https://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-s3222dgm-32-led-curved-qhd-freesync-gaming-monitor-displayport-hdmi-black/6473700. I wanted an VA monitor. A lot of people like IPS instead. This has 4000-1 contrast ratio, which I'm used to, and IPS never has. 5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. Crystal Light VR.
July 26, 20223 yr The ultimate monitor IMO is an OLED or QLED 40"+, but they are expensive, especially ones with the curve, and you need the curve IMO unless you want to mount the thing even farther back. Once I tried the curved monitors, it's hard to go back to a non-curve. I tried an ultrawide on my projector in MSFS (120" screen but I was far back), and it was just too much. I preferred 16:9 on the projector, but it could have been partly due to the giant screen (though I was 12+ feet back). I feel like I probably should get a 40" instead of these (3) 32" monitors I have here for testing. If I do, I am going to stick with 16:9 though, but definitely need the curve at that size. The ultimate overall setup is a curved projector screen with a projector, but the problem is the amount of room it takes up to do it, plus it isn't cheap if you want a high-contrast projector. Should be here this weekend, my first real dip into VR, well tried it once but that was on an old cruddy set. I have both an Oculus Rift S and the Quest 2. I love my quest! I can go stand alone and I can link to my computer for sim'n. There will be some setup and tweaking for MSFS. I will recommend DCS and aerofly fs as well as they are well tuned out of the box for VR. I spend a lot of time in DCS with VR and it's down right astonishing how realistic it is. At times, I actually forget that I am flying a simulator because everything becomes so natural. Nothing beats dog fighting a mig in a tomcat, skimming the treeline in a apache or brrrrt'n some tanks and supply trucks in a A10. The SIM is beautiful. I even get elevated heart rates at night landing on a carrier after an hour long mission. Rick Rick D http://g5flyer.tumblr.com/
July 26, 20223 yr ^^ Thanks for the info on the VR ^^ Looking forward to trying it out later, right now still dealing with my "new monitor decision". I found a 39" Deco Gear (generic) 2560x1440 monitor from Walmart.com for only $499. I made my own thread about the 4 monitors I am currently testing, as to not fill up other threads. The thread is here --- for anyone wanting to read about my tests. It doesn't have freesynch but it has a basic adaptive synch which is fine for my uses. It is only QHD - 1440p resolution (2560x1440), so not 4k, but I will compare to the 32" 4k Dell and make my decision.
