Asobo Caravan Cruising Speed

Featured Replies

i am using the default Cessna Caravan and found that I was struggling with speed. After checking online, it says the real aircraft has a cruising speed of 344kmh, which translates to 214mph.

In the game I am struggling to maintain anything above 150  at full power (with flaps fully away) unless I am descending. I also see a red line against the speed indicator if I go over approx 210?

Is this speed shown in knots, if so, 214mph converts to 185 kts, which I am still unable to achieve?

Am I doing something wrong (or stupid) or is there an issue with this aircraft?

Those reference values are probably TAS (true air speed) and not indicated which is what you're trying to achieve. The speed in the aircraft is shown in knots yes.

I agree it's probably TAS. I normally cruise at 1850 RPM and speed is in the range of 140-150 IAS depending on the winds. From TOD I let her settle at 1800 and I get around 150+ but still away from the barber pole.

I believe you are on to something. At 5000ft on a standard day, you are looking at 172 IAS to attain 186 true. Keep in mind that the higher you go, the faster the true will be. This happens because you have to fly faster to attain the same IAS at higher altitudes due to the compressibility factor. I fly jets and I get my fastest true at mach change over altitude. In my jet, this happens between 28,500 and 29,500 depending on conditions. The system changes to mach and from there my true airspeed decreases as I climb while maintaining .80. This is why I always file 280 or 290 if I am in a hurry. For comparison, at 10,000ft on a standard day, you are looking at 160 IAS to attain 186 true. If you maintained 172 IAS, you would be looking 200 true, which is above the max cruise of 186 true. If the Caravan can't attain advertised speeds on a standard day, something is wrong. You can test this by clearing real weather and going with standard conditions(29.92/SL/59F/15C). Keep in mind that specs can be tricky. Most specs are based on maximum operating weights and standard day. They may change some criteria based on beneficial data. For example, Gulfstream may base their advertised max range numbers on 8 passengers and a specific mach. If they base it on max passengers, that range decreases.

Looks like the Grand Caravan EX top speed is 185 KTAS per the Textron site.  I'm not sure where the C208 goes the fastest.... but at 10000 ft it's about 154 KIAS (the speed indicated in your cockpit)

At 8000 ft, 185 KTAS is about 159 KIAS

At 6000 it's 165 KIAS

At 4000 it's 171 KIAS

Interesting...

I fly the modded version of this aircraft (msfs2020-C208-Improvement-Mod).  I follow the POH procedures as much as is possible with the model.  ( I also fly the unmodded version from time to time, usually after a system update of MSFS nukes the mod for a short period of time).

I have been very impressed by the accuracy of the mod when it comes to matching the POH at cruise. Usually, the mod is within 1-2 knots of the published speed (KTAS) - that's remarkable.  According to the POH, the average cruising speed at 8,000 - 10,000 MSL (with cargo pod installed) is 169 - 172 KT TAS btwn 0-10 degrees C.  The mod has been within a knot or two (and sometimes spot-on) of these speeds.  It is also fairly accurate in climb and the torque settings are well-integrated with the WT g1000.

I also find the cruising speeds of the unmodded aircraft to be fairly close to POH, though the torque settings during climb are not as accurate,

It could be that you are looking at performance statistics for the aircraft without the cargo pod installed?  I know there is a mod or two that removes this.  It would be interesting to compare,

Hi, another question about a similar thing.

Lets say 175 Knots is already in the red bad (overspeed). (i dont say thats the case with the Caravan, its a general question)

Lets say my indicated airspeed is 155 knots but TAS is shown on the G1000 as 176 knots.

Am I already overspeeding? Or is the red band for overspeed just in indicated airspeed but not True airspeed?

As pilot you fly using indicated speed as read on airspeed indicator or ASI. ASI marking are for indicated airspeed -not for  true, calibrated or equivalent speeds. Hope in make sense
