How many have brief pauses secondary to Disk Access?

Featured Replies

After some troubleshooting I discovered my random but recurrent brief pauses may be related to disk access when large files are read in flightsimulator.exe.  If you frame lock by vsync to 30 or 40 FPS open DevMode if you will and observe when flying something heavy (doesn't really need to be but may help manifest the issue) for 30 minutes or so and see what you see.

This screenshot shows what happens to my 30 frame lock when this occurs:spacer.png

And this screenshot shows what happens when I ran a Disk Bench Read Suite which is reading large chunks via AIDA64 while flying.  You can see the actual disk read didn't interfere w/ frame rate despite lots of disk reading, but that wasn't to Flightsimulator.exe.  It appears whenever large chunks are read in FS.exe this is when these brief pauses happen.

It seems like all of this began w/ SU10, but I'm not sure.  I did a complete new install of Win 10 a week ago.  PLEASE let me know if you're running OS/MSFS on the same disk, AND if you're running Win 10 or 11.  Thanks!!spacer.png

I have.  Been noticing it more and more (all aircraft from Fenix to the default Baron).  It's really bad when third party scenery is in the area. I actually turned on my cache thinking it would help with the situation, but it didn't.  The issue is slight but happens no matter what phase of flight you're in and it is new to SU10 on my end.😐

Well that's two now who believe it's new since SU10.  Nothing more irritating than troubleshooting something out of our control if indeed that's it, and it must be as I DID NOT have this happening for the bulk of the time in this sim.  I think I will Zendesk it w/ images who know it may help.  I turned off the Rolling Cache, but never needed to previously, and it didn't make any difference.

I really wonder how many are experiencing this, if they have OS and MSFS on the same drive, and if using Win 10 or 11, and while here if using DX11 or DX12.  I see you're on Win 10 too Dillon.

I run the sim in W10 with DX11.  Start as thread in the official forums.  Send a link here so we know where to go to report the issue.  I'm sure we are not the only ones.😎

Disable AI traffic and see if that solves it, other possible solution is to disable Photogrammetry and/or Sat Imagery.

I have not noticed any stutter/pause, but I haven't had time to fly much in SU10 yet.  Just a handful of flights in the IFE M-346 so far and I didn't notice any stuttering.

My OS -- Win10 -- and MSFS are /not/ on the same physical drive.   In fact my OS is on an M.2 whereas MSFS is actually on a slower plain-jane SSD.  I plan to rectify that situation when I rebuild...

But anyway, I'll hopefully get some flying in this weekend, but I think if it had stuttered under SU10 on my rig, I would have noticed it by now, even in my handful of SU10 flights.  I really haven't fully configged my sim for SU10/DX12/new driver yet.  I noticed quite a slowdown flying out of Teterboro and over NYC, which isn't unexpected, but I may end up playing around with vsync and locks and various AA modes, to see what works best for my setup.  I wish MSFS had performance profiles as P3D has because I'd have a "urban" preset of settings and a "rural" one as well.

If you decide to throw Win11 on it, I would be tempted to not put that over the existing Win10 install.  I would pull it down as lean and mean as possible.  I'm wondering if you don't have some sort of driver disk access issue as ProcMon noting explorer.exe disk access isn't very illuminating to us is it?   Did you use DDU last time?  I rarely use DDU, but I did with the recent driver due to the number of changes (DX12, and studio vs. game-ready).  Also make sure you don't have any custom TDRLevel stuff going on in the registry.

I used to get stuttering on approach and around big airports like EGLL,KJFK etc and the London scenary has been renouned for it. But since upgrading to the AMD Ryzen 5800x3D, And Radeon 6800 16gb, the same 32gb DDR4 ram and M/ Board I just never get them now. Coupled to NVme drives, Running Win 11 fully updated, and Cache is not used. The 1gb Fibre probably helps as well.

Granted i run at 1080p as i am right next to the screen, and it looks pretty word not allowed good as it is.

I think there are things to be aware of when having two m.2 drives in terms of occupying PCI lanes, FWIW.

From the last screenshot showing it appeared to be flightsimulator.exe that was associated w/ the pause and appearance of explorer.exe in ProcMon.  It's like it is interupting the sim in order to do a larger disk read in flightsimulator.exe's domain.  Clearly the disk can crank out serious disk reading (AIDA64's benchmark) w/o interfering w/ flightsimulator.exe so it doesn't seem like limited disk function is the culprit (i.e., might not support needing separate drives for OS/MSFS).  I made one other change and while it did not stop these recurrent hard but brief pauses it did make all of the vertical lines in the horizontal indicator bands in the DevMode OSD disappear.  Notice the vertical lines below the 30.0 FPS indicator in the OSD:spacer.png

Now notice the absence of those vertical lines.  I'm assuming this might equate to smoother performance but haven't had a chance to verify it.  This effect did persist after takeoff in this night flight:spacer.png

Hi,

I have also experienced this kind of pause (1/2 s) which comes back regularly. I don't use any additional liner to MSFS and I fly with light aircraft.
I am under W10 maj made yesterday evening and installed on a Samsung 850 Go SSD (C:\XBoxGames)
MSFS was reinstalled yesterday in SU11 Beta with all WU on a separate 250 Go Cruxial SSD (F:\MSFS)
MSFS works in DX11 and TAA mode, others settings initialized by MSFS during installation / RTX 3060 Ti

Changing for DX12, theses pauses has disapear ....

Thank you Lagaffe for responding.  Did you happen to check for these pauses in DX11 after your reinstall?  In other words, are you pretty sure it was DX12 that stopped the pauses, or the new install that did the trick?

Yesterday, after my MSFS reinstall from scratch I fly two or three flights with my Beaver DHC-2 (personal creation) around CTH3. To test after a reinstall, I use always parameters configured by the software: as it. During theses tests I noticed some pauses during external panoramic.

My Commuty contains only my Beaver, 6 Quebec freeware (CYMX, CTH3 of mine http://frenchvfr.free.fr) (CYHU, CYRQ, CYUL, CYQB of JP Fillion and G. Boily https://www.jpfil.com/quebec-fs2020) and the GAIST v2 of H. Nielsen.

This morning I have only maded a disk image of my Samsung ( C:\ and Microsoft hidden partitions) with Acronis and I saw your post waiting the end of my backup. In order to try, this afternoon, I have only changed DX12 in UserCFG.opt using Notepad (PreferD3D12 0 => 1) and maded the same flights that yesterday.

I have maded an other test with PreferD3D12 : 1 => 0 (using DX11) and nothing appear today.

  • Weather is configured on real time,
  • MSFS has been tested in full screen and also in windowed mode,
  • I have changed several time between external and internal view
  • Defender is configured to avoid F:\MSFS but C:\ is under Defender protection.
  • Photogrammetry cities are't installed (I don't like this).

So I am quite surprised and doubtful: I cannot conclude !
I understand that between the 12th and 14th of October Microsoft migrated their MSFS servers to more powerful servers to absorb more load (17th Nov. release) so there was probably a side effect.

On my forum (http:///pilote-virtuel.com), people has had the same problem and they have some doubts about the FBW a32nx version dev / simbridge installation required (http://www.pilote-virtuel.com/viewtopic.php?pid=1097756#p1097756). They are using MSFS in SU10 version. .

Did you guys with the pauses check your disks with a program like Crystal Disk Mark to ensure the performance was as expected?

I do get pauses in Dev mode constantly when doing things lately, but almost never in the game itself.
The Dev mode pauses can sometimes last 8+ seconds, but average about 3-5 seconds.
Other than that, MSFS has gotten better in every way, but Dev mode needs another update.
