Sim video capture

Featured Replies

Shadowplay, 4k 60fps 50mbps (probably could bump this up a bit) then straight upload to YT.

@Cpt_Piett Looking good! When it is all said and done, viewers will not notice the odd minor stutter that we at times obsess about. My 2080ti still performs exceptionally well given the number of programs running simultaneously when I do my recordings at 4K on a wide screen monitor. In addition to the sim running at 4K full screen (60fps), I am running SkyDolly, my ForeFlight client - FlightEvents and Action - the screen recording program.

My lord, that looks great! Razor sharp image and silky-smooth 👌

Pretty remarkable for that old 9900K to be able to run the sim and Shadowplay simultaneously!

Thanks. I guess it's easy to obsess about stutters, lol 🙂

Except when the viewers are other simmers and especially when the video was made to demonstrate stutter-free animation 😉  I would love to be able to capture what my eyes & visual cortex "see" as it it nothing short of fluid & stutter-free.  I'm down now to just 0 to 3 minor stutters per couple hour flight in the 738 and CRJ and it's phenomenal.  I had forgotten just how incredible this sim is as I think I had slowly evolved more stuttering and kind of got used to it until I began getting hard pauses and other types of stutters.  I'm not surprised now if I don't see one from pushback to altitude!  On the other end at arrival I'll likely see a 1-3 minor hitches.  I'm thinking a badass 7800x3D or even 13900K will eliminate that, but the emperical proof remains to be seen.  Clearly there are folks here about to embark on that combination so we can see how well the current brute force hardware can resolve any and all types of stuttering.  Stuttering is the quintessential immersion killer for me!

Shadowplay is good. Thanks for mentioning that.

@Noel I hear you my friend! Still running a i9-10900 with my 2080ti. Was thinking of going for 4xxx series GPU but I am going to hold off for a new build from the ground up likely next year sometime when the verdicts are out on the best combo for this sim. As the saying goes, you are only as good as the weakest link (performance wise) in this hobby! If I can get the sim video as smooth as my real world GoPro video we are really in for a treat!

Fortunately you can have flawless performance with less than 4xxx  series GPU.   The faster frame rate would be icing on the cake but ultimately it's not the cake itself which is, as I say, flawless stutter-free animation at a minimum acceptable frame rate.  That last part if completely subjective.  Right now a hot CPU and a Gsync display would get me to maybe 36fps anywhere and everywhere in PMDG class planes with a T-LOD of say 200, and that is simply not worth it to me.  The diff between 30 and 36 is paltry, and T-LOD of 100 and 200 is marginal at best.  So we'll see.

A hot CPU is a temptation but this 9900K is just running so well, so cool it's so close to closing that last piece of tolerating all arrival airports with no hitches and w/ a T-LOD of 150 or more is all we ask.  I'm guessing a 7850x3D will easily drive the 5xxx series GPU so that will be my next system build time so that's probably a couple years out for me which is fine.  I can see 7850x3D w/ my 3080Ti working well until then.  I mainly want to know how well that CPU runs in terms of heat and if it's amenable to air cooling as that is all need.

Still salty about that 4090 video I posted? 😉 I did kinda screw up with that one though, I'll admit that. Please also keep in mind that stutter sensitivity probably has individual variances. But to your credit that video you posted today was exceptionally smooth. Seems like you've found the holy grail.

I'm getting good results with Action. Could be as it features multicore optimized video codec (FICV). But I've also done some core affinity tweaks using Process Lasso, putting it on the E-cores so that it doesn't compete with MSFS which is on the P-cores.

I've tried a few captures in 1440p 60fps @ 30Mbps. I could probably increase the bitrate further to increase the quality - but that will of course also increase the size (and the upload time to YouTube). I'm also getting some audio crackles, so increasing the audio bitrate would probably help. There's also a multi-channel audio option.

Here's a capture I did today:

@Cpt_Piett Great! Coming in a little hot .... but you tamed it just fine before touchdown. Super landing! Looks like you have ACTION working just fine! It is one of the best screen recording programs out there (and I have tried many)! Yes, uploading and processing at the YT end (especially 4K) takes a long time. I'm in the habit now of downloading before I go to bed. In the morning it is ready for checking and publishing.

Haha I know. I realized I had my torque setting too high so I went to idle a bit early and got lucky with the timing 🙂 It's an amazing approach though - so much fun and the scenery is pretty spectacular.
