November 4, 20223 yr That video cuts off before Carl Sagan talks about a fifth dimension and other interesting ideas. So basically the Earth IS flat, it's just wrapped around a sphere. 😄 And our three dimensional universe is wrapped around a four dimensional sphere. Simple. The video cuts off before Sagan gets a chance to talk much about curved three dimensional space. Conceptually, if you have a powerful enough telescope, you can see the back of your own head. Such a construct can be produced by the intersection of two five dimensional spheres. Whether moving toward each other or due to one or both five dimensional spheres expanding until they intersect, the initial contact would be a single point which would then expand, creating a four dimensional sphere bounded by a three dimensional space. Similar to how two four dimensional spheres intersecting would create a three dimensional sphere bounded by a two dimensional plane, or how two three dimensional spheres intersection to create a two dimensional circle (think of two soap bubbles) bounded by a one dimensional line. A single point that expands to create our entire universe? We've heard that one before. Hook Edited November 4, 20223 yr by LHookins Larry Hookins Oh! If so, I seem to recall that there was some sort of projected energy field that was the cause of their predicament. No, don't think so. There was no specific cause for their two dimensional universe. One of the characters suggests that a four dimensional universe might be possible, and he's derided for the suggestion.

Yes, I checked google and discovered that it was not the tale I was thinking of. I wish I could remember the name of that book. If course, it was over fifty years ago! Fr. I thought at the time the title didn't match the story's premise at all... Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
