My new FS PC? another way to look at it

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

As you can see from my signature, I am lagging a bit on cutting edge hardware to say the least.  However I am finding the glut of information on MSFS systems to be a little overwhelming.  At my age, my friend who used to advise me has passed away I was hoping I could get your thoughts.  I am not worried (too much) on cost, future proofing, max FPS, system temps, latest products, ect.  So I figured I would ask my question from a different angle so to speak.  I cant really build my own so I will likely go to something like https://xforcepc.com/

Question: moving up the hardware ladder from my current system, at what CPU, GPU, RAM combination point do you think I would first hit an average of 40 FPS under the following conditions:

 Target 40 fps average

New York City fly by at 1500 feet
Fenix A320
AIG (or similar)
LOD 120
mixed weather (some cloud, light rain)
2560 x1440 (essentially 2k)
75% setting ultra (remainder high)

no other apps running

CPU?
GPU?
RAM?

Thanks to you all.

CPU: Core i5-6600K 4 core (3.5GHz) - overclock to 4.3 | RAM: (1066 MHz) 16GB
MOBO: ASUS Z170 Pro |  GeForce GTX 1070 8GB | MONITOR: 2560 X 1440 2K

In above mentioned scenario? All I can say is that in this scenario, with LOD 200 for both terrain and objects, I am at 45 FPS above NY, no AIG active. This with a 13600K, 2x16GB DDR4 RAM (3200 MT/s CL14) and a 6900XT (Sapphire SE). 1440p and almost 100% in CPU limit. Almost all settings on ultra, render scale 130 (doesnt matter in this scenario), DX11.

Greetings, Chris

AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, 2x32GB DDR5 6000MT/s RAM, MSI RTX 4090 Ventus 3X, Windows 11 Home, MSFS2024

If I were building right now I'd honestly just get the best you can afford.  13900K / rtx 4090 / 32gb ram that way you don't have to think about it.

If you're more budget minded then maybe a AMD 58003XD with RTX 3070 Ti and 32 GB ram.

I get those fps with default longitude in that area but at the time I didn't run AI traffic.  I did have Dream flight KTEB though.  Add traffic and heavy clouds and I'd be around 30 at 1440p res.  I've got a dated 1080 Ti though... For me I'm planning to look at AMD GPUs soon or just suck it up and get a 4080.

With dlss3 the fps will be much higher than we've ever really seen in a flightsim.

Oh I'd grab a 1000w PSU as well maybe even one with gen 5 cable support.  These Nvidia 40xx cards are power hungry.

Here - 4k USD for this beast of a rig.  It's a nice rig.

thank you guys for your input, hoping to get a few others to chime in on what they get on their systems.

Random flight from 22R KJFK (Asobo handcrafted) to 4L KEWR (vanilla) inititally at 5,000 feet with photogrammetry on, then flew N.E. along Manhattan island, did a loop and flew S.W. with photogrammetry off.
Really annoyingly, despite many screenshots, GeForce Experience 'cleverly' hid my RTSS OSD data and my showing of a tabbed open window for PSXTraffic displaying the number of AI aircraft around me.
You'll just have to take my word for what FPS I achieved in my flight with the Fenix A320.

Here's some screenshots of my sim's graphics settings for you:

And here's some 'take my word for it' in-sim shots:

38-41 FPS on take-off

41-45 FPS with Photogrammetry turned on at 5,000 ft

37-42 FPS outside looking towards KJFK

34-38 FPS with PG turned off and default autogen NYC in shot

38-41 FPS with just Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and beyond in shot

26-35 FPS between final and landing on 4L at KEWR (yes, yes, I was landing opposite traffic 😅 Wanted to show the worst case scenario of all the traffic and NYC in the picture).
Absolutely no noticeable stutters, but my PC was working hard at that point.

I ran SoFly's Weather Preset Pro with the 'Grey and Dull' overcast preset to try and meet your ask. Using any of the rain presets made nothing worthwhile screenshotting.
I also ran PSXseeconTraffic and RealTraffic as my standard method of injecting AI traffic into my sim, using both AIG and FSLTL models. IIRC, there were about 40 aircraft (15 active and 25 parked) around me at KJFK, with about 15 at KEWR (10 active and 5 parked). The PSXT app limits the amount of traffic by distance during high resource demand, such as landings.
Forgot to turn off REX AccuSeason trees, but that should have had negligible effect.
Road traffic on at 20, all other sim traffic turned off.
Everything else default.

My PC hardware details are listed in my signature below.
Note that I run a ultra-wide 21:9 monitor, rather than your requested 16:9 wide. While I had vsync turned on in Nvidia Control Panel, my usual go-to of a max frame rate of 30 FPS was set instead to off. This makes the GPU attempt to create more frames than I usually limit it to and causes an FPS drop.

Hope this has been helpful.

If cost is no issue then of course you get the best you can. Who knows what addons or new features will exist in future that you want to take advantage of. But seeing as money doesn't grow on trees it's often better to set a budget and buy the best that budget can offer.

there's always professional shops like xforce pc if money is not the issue.

Yes, and that is why they are listed in my original post.  What I struggle with is which one of those systems would reasonably hit the performance markers in my original post.  I get that their top end system would do that.  Question is, what should I buy from them for my needs as posted.

No cost issues? see my post the holy grail... 7950X, 4090, 32GB DDR5 6000mhz
